Football League Websites

There are not many sites that focus on the lower leagues (L1 and L2) exclusively. The majority cover the whole of the League, usually with the Premiership as well. Those listed here are in our opinion the best, or provide a particular feature not found in the others. Most sites were reviewed two years ago, if nothing significant has changed then the original review has been left unaltered, other than relevant URL's being updated.

The Football League Official Site.
What you'd expect from the official League website: lots of factual material, press releases, and like stuff. Covers the Worthington Cup and LDV Vans Trophy as well as the league with further sections on the reserves and youth leagues. Well laid out and simple to use. On top of that it's a PTV site but you don't have to register to use it - why can't they all be like that? RECOMMENDED.
[HG 13-05-03/JM 29-5-05]

Coca-ColaFootball.co.uk
The sponsor's official site. Replaced the useful and informative previous sponsors site with a gimmicky Flash-driven mess with lots of bells and whistles but precious little in the way of useful content. You'll visit it once, think 'that's pretty' and never go back. Disappointing.
[JM 29/05/05]

TheFA.com.
The official F.A. site. There's quite a lot of useful stuff here on the wider aspects of the game as well as the competitions run under the auspices of the F.A. and the International sides, but it's not always easy to find what you want. Rather too glitzy and self-promotional, and not enough solid substance, for my tastes.
[HG 13/05/03]

BBC Sport - Football, with a dedicated League One page.
News and results, plus live text coverage from League One matches - invaluable if you can't get to the game. Some of the brief match reports were an absolute joke last season though - leaving one wondering if the reporter had just collected his / her expenses without actually attending the game. The site was redesigned during the 2002-03 season. Preferred the old version.
[HG 13/05/03]

ITV Sport.
As with most things ITV it's not really worth bothering with. It does much less than the BBC site, much less well. There used to be a dedicated L1/L2 part of the site but this now has disappeared. File under 'WoT' for Waste of Time.
[HG 13-05-03/JM 29-5-05]

sportinglife.com - Football.
The football branch of Sporting Life's wide ranging sports coverage. There is a dedicated League 1 section, which collects news items from elsewhere, and has some stats etc. The best features are the vidiprinter for scores, the live tables and the live text reports on games - though these tend to slow to a stop during busy periods, such as Saturday afternoons. Doh! Still a very useful resource for all that.
[HG 13-05-03/JM 29-5-05]

Ananova - Football.
One of the best 24 hour live general news services on the Web, Ananova has a dedicated football section. Used to have dedicated pages for each English league and individual team but disappointingly these have now been discontinued.
[JM 29/05/05]

News Now - Football.
Useful feature on e-soccer (see Links section) that collates and links to the latest news items as they come in around the Net. The Yeovil Town section can be found here. RECOMMENDED.
[JM 29/05/05]

Yahoo! Sport - Football.
Collects and regurgitates news items from other sites. The main convenience is that it makes some attempt to categorise them by division, though its AI is pretty basic which can produce some odd stories appearing on the League 1 page.
[HG 13/05/03]

Sky Sports Football, with a League 1 section here.
As one would expect closely tied into Sky's satellite TV empire. Good for finding out when you'll next be on the box, presuming it's Sky; otherwise the BBC site does all that this site does, and does it better.
[HG 13-05-02/JM 29-5-05]

Football365.com.
Huge rambling commercial site with a tabloidesque approach to its news and views. As one might expect news coverage rapidly declines the further one gets away from the Premiership. The site suffers from trying to be all things to all men (and women); it does however have one of the best current stats sections on the Net (see Statistics section). Oh, and keep your pop-up killer switched on.
[HG 13/05/03]

TEAMtalk.com.
Another 'kitchen sink' site. Takes the policy that if you print 100 speculative stories 10 might turn out to be correct. A free e-mail service will deliver all the er, news on football and horse racing straight to your desk top. Hope the tips are more reliable than some of the news items. The Yeovil section is here.
[HG 13/05/03]

Givemefootball.
The official website of the Professional Footballers' Association. A site that covers football far more widely than its provenance might suggest. The PFA Transfer Directory is especially useful - though this section of the site requires registration.
[HG 16/05/03]

The Football Forum
A collection of forums. The League 1 forum is here.
[JM 29-5-05]

Football Forums.
Another collection of forums. The League 1 forum is here.
[JM 29/05/05]

LeaguePortal.
Not much here other than a set of forums for the various football league divisions ruled with a rod of iron by webmaster and Donny fan Wroey. Not that he needs to get his big stick out very often (oo-er missus) because the mostly young clientele are generally too busy flirting with each other to argue overmuch. Used to be one of the slowest sites around, but a recent makeover has improved matters considerably.

Links Websites

e-soccer.
On line since 1998 this is principly a links site, though it does diversify into other areas. Links are grouped by club and also a variety of other categories. Premiership and Football League clubs are here. The site is easy to navigate, the links tend to work, and in some experimental sampling most of the main active sites we knew of for particular clubs were listed. It was weaker on listing older sites, which whilst dormant can sometimes be useful archives. RECOMMENDED.
[HG 13/05/03]

Fanbase.
Another directory which is easy to use and thoroughly comprehensive, with links to sites from the Premiership down to Level 6 of the Pyramid. Simple, but effective - it has the advantage that each club's listings include some local press sites and a one line summary of the content of the fans' sites. RECOMMENDED.
[HG 13/05/03]

Soccerlinks.
Links, links and yet more links. The directory structure here is geographical. Going through Europe and England one arrives at League 1.

Newspapers

It may only be one division higher, and no Yeovil player is going to get the coverage of Mr D. Beckham, but the attitude of the National press to League as opposed to Non-league still crosses a huge divide. Whereas Non-league is pretty much restricted to the "plucky little minnows" approach when the F.A. Cup comes around, the papers feel obliged to cover the whole Nationwide League. It's not that they care much about the likes of the lower divisions, but tradition dictates that if you are a League club the press must at least begrudgingly recognise your existence. At least the hard copy versions do. But what of cyberspace?

The NATIONALS.

Guardian Unlimited - Football
Simple bias has this listed first - I've been a Guardian reader all my life. Articles are rather more 'literary' than some might be used to. The Fiver, which as its name hints hits the Net around 5 p.m. each day, is a satirical look at current football events, often funny and occasionally thought provoking. RECOMMENDED.
[HG 14/05/03]

Telegraph Sport.
Pains me to say it, but the Torygraph probably has the most comprehensive on-line coverage of football of all the nationals, and makes more effort than the others to acknowledge the lower divisions. Registration is required these days which is a drawback, but otherwise it's RECOMMENDED.
[HG 14-5-03/JM 29-5-05]

Times Online and Sunday Times.
Perfectly acceptable, but not as good as the above two broadsheets in this reviewer's opinion.
[HG 14/05/03]

Independent.co.uk.
I've never really understood the point of the Independent. The website evokes exactly the same emotion.
[HG 14/05/03]

Online Sun.
The word "exclusive" appears a lot. Good site if you want to know the colour of Beck's underpants - or if he wears any......
[HG 14/05/03]

Mirror.co.uk.
There might be clubs below the Premiership, but you'd hardly know.
[HG 14/05/03]

Sunday Mirror.co.uk.
I believe the technical term is waste of space.
[HG 14/05/03]

MegaStar.
Used to be the site of the Daily Star, but they sold it. If you still get hot flushes looking at the underwear section in a Littlewoods catalogue this is the site for you. If you are over 14, or remotely interested in football, it probably isn't.
[HG 14/05/03]

News of the World.
Sporting content is limited to four or five main stories from the paper. You know the sort: 'Patrick Vieira Ate My Hamster!'
[HG 14/05/03]

The People.
Mostly dross, but it does occasionally recognise that footballers play matches sometimes, and there's even rare references to games below the Premiership.
[HG 14/05/03]

The REGIONALS.

Western Daily Press.
The WDP's online presence usually contains 1 or 2 YTFC stories a day. Articles are usually well-written and informative though one sometimes wishes that the regional hacks would be a little more critical than they are - especially when reporting on the activities and sayings of a certain Bristol Rovers manager.
[JM 29/5/05]

Bristol Evening Post.
The BEP concentrates on the two Bristol clubs these days, with only the occasional article featuring Somerset's finest.
[JM 29/5/05]

Western Morning News

Western Gazette.
The Western Gazette's on-line presence was abysmal for years, but is now on a par with its Bristol regional cousins. Over the years the quality of it's journalism has gradually improved as well, a certain well-known female columnist apart. The site is updated weekly at around 3pm every Thursday.
[JM 29/5/05]

Yeovil Express.
In sports editor Steve Sowden the paper has - in our opinion - the best journalist writing regularly about YTFC around. The site is updated weekly after the printed version appears, usually on the Thursday. RECOMMENDED.
[JM 29/5/05]

Statistics Websites

Football 365 Statistics.
THE current stats site on the Net. More stats than you could shake ten sticks at. All the top five divisions and every club therein covered in mind blowing detail. Go directly to League 1 and Yeovil Town through these links. RECOMMENDED.
[HG 16/05/03]

Soccerbase.com.
Best site for information on personnel - players, managers....... and even referees. The site has lots more, but it is the database on players that is the jewel in its crown. Promptly updated and generally pretty accurate. RECOMMENDED.
[HG 16/05/03]

40 Year A-Z Player's Career Details.
Career details for players from 1960 to 2002. Currently the author of the site has completed the details for 65 English League and former League clubs. Yeovil Town NOT currently included
[HG 16/05/03]

Soccer-stats.com.
Stats from 1992-93 to the present, covering the top four English divisions and the Scottish Premier.
[HG 16/05/03]

Tony Kempster's Football Site
Tables and results for the current season from all leagues to level 9 of the pyramid and selected level 10 leagues.
[HG 16/05/03]

Football Club History Database.
Immense database (the author says 4,900 teams are currently covered - I didn't count, but I believe him). Each record is organised in the same way - a seasonal summary of highpoints, league table information (Pld - W - D - L - F - A - Pts - Pos), and then available cup information. RECOMMENDED.
[HG 16/05/03]

RSSSF.
Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation. This is ultimate anorak country. Archives from around the World. Has stats on the English league, but nothing one can't find elsewhere; but if you suddenly have a hankering to find out who's up and who's down in the So Tom e Prncipe (it's somewhere in Africa) league, or the score in the match between Jai Hind Nickerie v Inter Moengotapoe in the Surinam league (it was 0-0) there's just no where else worth visiting.
[HG 16/05/03]

Fans Info Websites

Football Ground Guide.
Covers every stadium in the top five English divisions, and includes almost every bit of information one could want. One might quibble with some of the opinions, but this is undoubtedly one valuable resource, and is right far more often that it's wrong. RECOMMENDED.
[HG 16/05/03]

Groundfinder.
Does just what it says: every English and Scottish league ground located via multimap.com on one convenient site. Simplicity itself, but not updated for several seasons now.
[JM 29/5/05]

Around-a-ground.
Site that covers the top four divisions. Uses multimap to provide a location map, aerial photo and things like the nearest pubs. Useful.
[HG 16/05/03]

Fanzone.
Covers 700 sports grounds, with all the English League clubs included. The focus is on the visiting supporter, and his or her needs. The details on some clubs are less comprehensive that others (Yeovil's details are approx 3 years out of date), but this site is a first port of call for the away fan. RECOMMENDED.
[HG 16/05/03]

theAwayEnd.
'The site for football fans travelling to matches in the UK and beyond,' it says. It mainly relies on fans submitting their own views on their visits to grounds. These can be interesting, but it also makes the quality somewhat variable.
[HG 16/05/03]

AWADS.
Site of the Association of Wheelchair & Ambulant Disabled Supporters. And excellent it is too. All English League, Scottish Premier League and some Non-league clubs are reviewed for their disabled provision. Sadly Huish Park doesn't come out of it too well. There is a facility for supporters to record their own experiences at each stadium.
[HG 08/06/03]

Miscellaneous Websites

Clubs In Crisis.
A site maintained by the Brighton And Hove Albion Supporters' Club, which of course is not unfamiliar with crises. Yeovil fans will remember when everything was far less rosy than now for our club too, and we were the ones living from one bucket collection to the next.
[HG 16/05/03]

Football Foundation.
Provider of funding for the grass-roots of the game, and gave us a nice grant towards sorting a roof for the Westland Stand as well. The Flash version of this site is well, er, flashy. Sorry.
[HG 16/05/02]

Footballgroundz.
Not a guide, but one fan's growing archive of photographs of football grounds, great and small.
[HG 16/05/03]

FootballTransfers.net.
If someone, somewhere is being or has been transferred then you'll find out about it here. If they aren't they'll speculate about it. Hard to work out rumour from actuality - so rather like the conversations of most football fans on the subject of transfers.
[HG 16/05/03]

Let's Kick Racism Out Of Football.
Disgraceful there even needs to be a site bearing this title. Of course the people who should be made to read it will never visit.
[HG 16/05/03]

Football Referee.
Last, and most definitely least: the official site of the Referee's Association.
