Name: Nathan Smith
Position: Left Back
Date of Birth: 11 January 1987
Place of Birth: Newcastle Upon-Tyne
Nathan Smith is a left-sided player who is usually found in the left-back position, although is also capable of playing in a left-wing position, and even started his career as a striker. He verbally agreed in May 2014, to return to Huish Park for his second spell with the club, signing a contract with the club on July 1st 2014.
When Nathan first broke into professional football, he had been working as an IT support person, turning out for Enfield between 2005 and 2007, before moving for a brief spell with Waltham Forest. It was when he moved to Potters Bar Town for the 2007-08 season that things began to change for him.
Former Yeovil Town midfielder Steve Browne was their manager at the time, and he recommended him to Glovers boss Russell Slade, with Browne allowing his player to head down to Huish Park on trial, playing in a number of Reserve Team matches, before Slade took him on non-contract terms, later rewarding him with a two year contract in the summer of 2008.
The Glovers gave Potters Bar a pre-season friendly during the following season, as Smith turned into a regular member of their first team, particularly once first choice left-back Nathan Jones began to take an off-the-field coaching role as assistant manager. Overall he made 118 appearances for the club across just over three years, scoring one goal - a spectacular 30 yard drive against Stockport County in December 2008.
In the summer of 2011, Smith turned down a new contract offer with Yeovil Town, signing a deal with Chesterfield, who were at that time in League One. He struggled to break into their first team during his first year with them, despite the Spireites getting relegated down to fourth tier football. During the following 2012-13 campaign though, he became one of their key players, picking up the fans' Player of the Year award and the Players' Player of the Year award, despite an ankle injury putting him out of action in March 2013 for the remainder of that season.
Nathan's 2012-13 season was a far lesser one, with the experienced Ritchie Humphreys arriving at the Proact Stadium and heavily restricting his appearances at the club down to just 15 matches. Overall he made 76 appearances for them, before deciding over the summer of 2014 to leave the Spireites.
When Nathan returned to the club in 2014, he was given a two year contract. That was extended by a further year in the summer of 2016, and then by another year in the summer of 2017, giving him a deal until June 2018.
