Name: Ryan Dickson
Position: Left Back
Date of Birth: 14 December 1986
Place of Birth: Saltash, Cornwall
Ryan Dickson is a left-back who is also capable of playing further up the flank. He was unveiled as a Yeovil Town player on July 1st 2015 after leaving Crawley Town for a 'nominal fee', having handed in a transfer request to the Sussex club, expressing a view that he wanted to get back closer to his West Country roots, following the birth of his first child.
Born in Saltash, Cornwall on December 14th 1986, he is a product of Plymouth Argyle's youth system, coming up through their ranks at the end of Paul Sturrock's first spell with the Pilgrims. The Glovers boss missed Dickson turning professional and making his first team debut by a couple of months, as he made seven appearances for the Devon club whilst still a teenager, combined with a nine game loan spell during the 2006-07 season.
Whilst still on Plymouth's books, Dickson played twice for Yeovil Town Reserves as a trialist, with a view to a loan deal, but nothing came of the move, and he instead signed a loan deal with Brentford in November 2007. Two months later they offered him a permanent deal, and that was to kick-start his career, forming part of the Bees' 2008-09 League Two promotion winning squad, and going on to make 106 appearances, scoring three goals across the three seasons he spent at Griffin Park.
That form alerted Southampton, who at that time were in League One, recovering from their financial meltdown, and they took on Dickson in the summer of 2010 in a tribunal-set deal that was to eventually cost them £225,000. He was part of the Saints League One promotion-winning team during 2010-11.
Having gained promotion to the Championship, Dickson dropped down the Saints pecking order, and for the second time in his career, he crossed paths with Yeovil Town - this time a January 2012 loan spell saw him come in as one of the first players to play under Gary Johnson's second spell - although was actually signed by Terry Skiverton just before the management change. There he played five times for the first team, scoring one goal in an away match against Bury later that month.
Southampton were keen on Dickson getting loan experience for the remainder of that season, and the upshot of that was that at the end of the first month spell, the Glovers lost him to Leyton Orient, with Russell Slade taking him for the remainder of that season, clocking up nine games at Brisbane Road. During the following season, with Saints now in the Premier League, he had a further six game loan spell with Bradford City, having dropped entirely out of his parent club's first team plans, ultimately making 30 appearances, and scoring one goal - all bar two of those coming at League One level.
Dickson returned briefly to Yeovil Town during the 2013-14 season for a third time - again as a trialist - but a lack of immediate match fitness meant the Glovers delayed giving him a deal, and Dickson headed off to trial for Plymouth Argyle, who also decided against offering him a deal. Colchester United eventually stepped in, giving him a one year deal, where he made 35 appearances. He then signed for Crawley Town the following summer, where he made 37 appearances, scoring one goal.
Ryan has signed a two year contract with the Glovers, keeping him there until the summer of 2017.
