Name: Omar Sowunmi
Position: Central Defender
Date of Birth: 7 November 1995
Place of Birth: Colchester
Omar Sowunmi was unveiled as a Yeovil Town player on June 24th 2015, as the club's seventh signing of that summer. Standing at 6ft 7ins tall, he arrived at the club as a central defender who came through Ipswich Town's academy, and was given a one year professional contract at Portman Road for the 2014-15 season, having moved through their Under-18 and Under-21 ranks. He had yet to make any first team appearances.
Born on November 7th 1995, the Essex based player enjoyed a one month youth loan with Conference National side Braintree Town during the 2014-15 season, where he made four appearances during October and November 2014. He then moved on to play for Lowestoft Town in January 2015, again as a loan agreement, and scored two goals in 17 appearances that took him through until the end of the 2014-15 campaign.
The Conference North side were keen to turn that arrangement into a permanent deal, with Ipswich having indicated their plans to release him at the end of the season just gone. However, Lowestoft admitted that he had been receiving interest from Football League clubs, with League Two side Exeter City taking him on trial. The Glovers also showed interest in him during May 2015, including him in the end of season trial matches where he played in the first trial match as a centre-back for the away team. As a result of that trial match, he was given the offer of a contract.
Omar's early appearances saw him play as a centre-back, but due to a shortage of goalscoring strikers, Paul Sturrock, who had brought him to the club as a defender, began to use him as a target man striker. That saw him score his first goal for the club in September 2015 against Morecambe, but unfortunately a bad ankle injury sustained in the following weekend's game against AFC Wimbledon saw him stretchered off, and an attempt at a comeback two months later saw him break down a second time with a repeat of that problem, putting him under the knife and bar a final day appearance, that was his final contribution of the season.
Despite that disruptive first season with the club, Omar signed a new contract with the club during the summer of 2016 that keeps him at the club until June 30th 2018. During the 2016-17 season, Darren Way used him only as a striker, but by the start of the 2017-18 season, Omar was back in his original centre-back position
