Taunton Town 0-2 Yeovil Town
Yeovil Goals: Rhys Murphy (46), Rhys Murphy (68)
Yeovil Town picked up a 2-0 away win in their fifth pre-season friendly on Tuesday night. Their 2-0 victory against Southern League Premier Division South side Taunton Town at Wordsworth Drive came thanks to former Chelmsford City striker Rhys Murphy, who bagged both goals on the night, taking his pre-season tally to five.
The Glovers went into the match using two trialists, both of whom have been seen before, as ex-Salisbury City midfielder Tom Whelan and former Dunfermline Athletic winger Myles Hippolyte got another chance to impress. Otherwise all other players were contracted, in a line-up that looked relatively close to Yeovil Town's strongest starting eleven, give or take an injured player.
The first half was a relatively even affair, with Taunton's best chance coming a quarter of an hour into the match during a succession of corners. One of those got recycled with Andrew Neal's header goalbound until Stuart Nelson's strong reflex save pushed the ball away. Just before half time, Ryan Seager was also denied when he was played in by Nestor Shako, with former Glovers Reserve and Youth keeper Lloyd Irish turning the ball around for a corner.
If Yeovil's first half play had been a bit uneventful, they made sure they started the second period in a very different way. Taunton only half cleared their lines, and when Craig Alcock picked up the loose ball, he found Rhys Murphy who cut inside and then curled a left footed shot into the top corner for a 0-1 lead.
The Glovers doubled their lead thanks to trialist Myles Hippolyte. His cross into the box found that man Rhys Murphy, whose flicked header went across the Taunton keeper and into the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage after 68 minutes.
Yeovil almost gifted Taunton a goal through their own mistake as a Tom Bradbury back header deceived Stuart Nelson, but the veteran managed to just about get back to claw the ball away for a corner. It was only in the closing stages that the Glovers made three late substitutions, with Courtney Duffus returning back into the first team line-up following his weekend away with the Academy side. They now have one last friendly against a Bristol City Under-23 outfit before the real thing starts for the 2019-20 campaign.
