Yeovil Town were comfortably beaten against League Two leaders Lincoln City on Tuesday night, as their brief recent revival was halted. The 0-2 scoreline came via two Danny Rowe goals during the first half, as he turned in a Neal Eardley cross at the near post, before doubling the lead in first half injury time from a Michael O'Connor through ball. The Glovers struggled to contribute anything in an attacking sense during the match, with only a single Sessi D'Almeida shot warming Grant Smith's hands, meaning that they never looked like getting back into the match once they fell behind, using up one of their games in hand over their rivals, and keeping them in 20th place.
The Glovers went into the match making two changes to their starting line-up from the team that played against Notts County on the weekend. Adel Gafaiti picked up a rather bloody head injury during that game, and the number of stitches in his forehead meant that he couldn't be risked. He was replaced by Bevis Mugabi. On the wing, Yoann Arquin was preferred by Rhys Browne. Daniel Ojo came onto the bench to fill the missing space.
Both sides grabbed early chances, with Tom Pett feeding John Akinde, whose shot was saved low down to his left by Nathan Baxter. At the other end of the park, a Carl Dickinson throw-in saw Sessi D'Almeida feed Alex Dobre. His cross into the box found Gary Warren still up from the set piece, but his glancing header went wide of the target.
Danny Rowe's shot from the edge of the box forced Nathan Baxter into action again, but Yeovil were still looking reasonably active at the other end, with Sessi D'Almeida's run into the penalty box seeing Grant Smith block his near post effort for a corner. However, Lincoln were bossing possession and territory in the main, with Rowe setting up Akinde midway through the first half, only for the former Barnet striker's shot to fly well wide, leaving his teammates calling for him to pass the ball next time.
That next time, Lincoln did get their attacking play right, with the opening goal. It was all a bit simple, as Neal Eardley got himself room down the right flank, no-one closed him down, and when his cross into the box was converted by Danny Rowe at the near post, it had the air of a training ground goal, with Yeovil's marking not tight enough in the wide positions or in the centre. 0-1 down.
The goal allowed Lincoln to move with greater ease, whilst Yeovil lost their tempo entirely as a Gary Warren head injury saw him go down for three minutes - something that was to ultimately force him off the pitch at half time. Just before that break, Yeovil fell further behind, and again they were not alert enough with their marking. A through ball by Michael O'Connor found Danny Rowe and for the second time in the game, the striker got the chance to turn and shoot, to put his side 0-2 up at half time.
Yeovil reorganised following Gary Warren's withdrawal, with Matt Worthington becoming the defensive midfielder, whilst Tom James moved into the back four. Still Lincoln looked comfortable, with a close range Harry Anderson header being turned over the crossbar by Nathan Baxter. Tom Pett's 20 yard shot deflected for a corner, then from that set piece Jason Shackell's acrobatic effort went over the bar.
The Glovers struggled to provide any attacking outlet once they went a goal behind, with only one attempt on goal during the second period. Francois Zoko set up Alex Dobre and although the AFC Bournemouth player cut in from the left flank, his shot flew over the crossbar. That was as good as it got, with Lincoln not really needing to get out of second gear throughout the second period.
Harry Anderson fired wide, whilst a Michael Bostwick overhead kick was deflected for a corner, as the Imps gradually racked up their shot count without looking threatened. Yeovil tried a few formation changes, converting to a midfield diamond that saw Alex Dobre act as an attacking midfielder in behind the strikers. Then when Gabriel Rogers came onto the pitch for the dying seconds, the tried and trusted 4-4-2 was restored, as Dobre and Rogers headed to the flanks. But it changed little, with the gap between the two sides visible on the night. Probably not a match where Yeovil were relying on collecting three points, but it acted as a reminder of the standard of the top sides in the division, and why their previous two wins shouldn't have them resting on their laurels. They remain 20th, with one of their games in hand used up.
