Yeovil Town went down to their sixth defeat in seven games on Saturday afternoon, as Crawley Town gained themselves a 0-1 away win that almost certainly resolved their own Football League status. The crucial goal came in the 72nd minute as Filipe Morias produced a sharp finish at the back post as he volleyed home with an angled drive. For the Glovers, they once again lacked a creative spark, with their best chances coming after they fell behind. Keeper Glenn Morris blocked a Ryan Seager header, before a fantastic double save denied Sessi D'Almeida and Alex Fisher, leaving Yeovil still stuck in the bottom two, although mercifully on a day where all three of the bottom sides all lost their matches.
The Glovers went into the match making two changes, along with a formation switch. Omar Sowunmi's ankle injury meant that Adel Gafaiti came in as a replacement centre-back, whilst up front Ryan Seager replaced midfielder Sessi D'Almeida, meaning that the 4-3-3 formation was dropped for a 4-4-2 line-up, as Seager partnered Courtney Duffus. In the Crawley line-up, Lewis Young occupied a full-back slot, whilst Bondz N'Gala sat the game out as an unused substitute.
Given both sides occupied the bottom of the form table, and it was 23rd vs 21st, it was no surprise that the game got off to a cagey start, although Crawley were the team with the better possession and territory. The first effort on goal came from Tristan Abrahams as he picked up a loose ball on the right wing before flashing a shot that went beyond the far post. But Crawley were getting balls into the box far more effectively, with Ollie Palmer's ball into the six yard area being brilliantly hooked away by Gary Warren, quickly followed by Reece Grego-Cox putting a back post header into the side netting.
As the half wore on, Yeovil managed to test keeper Glenn Morris on a couple of occasions - the first being a drive from the edge of the area from Bevis Mugabi, which Morris got low down to his right on to grasp. More dangerous was Ryan Seager's near post close range attempt which Morris did well to smother. Just on half time, a Tom James free kick was well read by Morris, considering it was right on the angle of the area where James could flight the ball with his right foot. Overall, Yeovil had probably had the better of the chances, but they had conceded far too much possession to a Crawley side that were very comfortable with the ball, and were obviously very comfortable with the half time scoreline.
The second period saw much of the same, even if a Courtney Duffus header flashed across the face of goal from a Tristan Abrahams corner. Alex Fisher was introduced for Duffus early in the second period to try to shake up the attacking play, but once again this was a half of few chances, as Ollie Palmer's header over the bar, and a shot on goal for Crawley substitute Ashley Nathaniel-George provided the best of the visitors' efforts.
Yeovil hadn't been sharp enough at cutting out Crawley's crosses into the box, and that proved to be their undoing 18 minutes from time. Ollie Palmer's cross from the right found an unmarked Filipe Morais at the back post, and he drilled an angled shot back across the goal and into the far corner, to give Crawley a 0-1 lead, and to silence a Huish Park crowd that had been noisily building up the atmosphere in the home terrace.
Sessi D'Almeida was introduced as a late substitute, with fellow sub Alex Pattison moving into a right-wing slot as Alex Dobre came off, seeing Tristan Abrahams switch flanks. In the closing stages, Yeovil twice came close to bagging an equaliser. The first saw a Ryan Seager header palmed from close range by Glenn Morris, with the striker unable to get off the deck to force home the rebound. Then came a double extraordinary save from Morris in second half injury time, as Pattison's right wing cross found D'Almeida and Alex Fisher fire shots at the Crawley keeper only to find his reflexes superb on the day. There was to be no late goal, and defeat leaves Yeovil still in 23rd place and two points short of safety. The only plus side was that Notts County and Macclesfield Town both lost their matches, but in what was their most winnable game of their final five, the Glovers came up short from a creative point of view until they'd already fallen behind, and in doing so they almost handed survival on a plate for their opponents.
