Yeovil Town's winless run in League Two stretched to ten games, as a Nicky Maynard goal midway through the first half proved enough to divide themselves and promotion chasing Bury. The Shakers' 0-1 win came after Jay O'Shea's cross into the box was converted by the former Bristol City striker to leave the Glovers still struggling with one win in their last eighteen matches at this level. Once again they struggled to create big chances, with Bevis Mugabi providing their best chance early in the second half, but with little happening in open play. The defeat sees Yeovil slip to 22nd in the table with only two teams now below them, and a three point gap.
The Glovers went into the match making three changes to their starting line-up, which also included a formation change. Nathan Baxter came in between the sticks as Stuart Nelson dropped out. In defence there were two new centre-backs, with Bevis Mugabi and Shaun Donnellan coming in, as Adel Gafaiti made way. That meant that Yoann Arquin dropped to the bench to allow a change to a 3-4-1-2 formation, with Tom James and Carl Dickinson expected to occupy midfield wing positions.
It took a while for the game to get going, with both teams cancelling each other out with their matching formations. But after a while, Bury started to look a bit more comfortable with what they were doing. A Jay O'Shea free kick deflected off the Yeovil defensive wall for the first chance of the game, and from the resultant corner, Bury were inches away from scoring. Neil Danns got himself space inside the box and his shot came off the inside of the post, and back into the grateful arms of Nathan Baxter.
Yeovil appeared to be trying to play Bury on the counter-attack, and their one and only chance during the first half came when Carl Dickinson put a long ball over the top for Jordan Green to run onto. His shot on the angle went into the side netting. That was as good as it got, as the Shakers took the lead midway throuh the half. A Nicky Adams free kick was half cleared, and Jay O'Shea was fed on the right flank. His cross back into the box saw Nicky Maynard push in front of a Yeovil defender to convert from inside the box for a 0-1 lead.
Around 35 minutes into the match, the initial 3-4-1-2 was abandoned as Tom James moved into the centre as a defensive midfielder, giving Yeovil a 4-1-3-2 formation, that ultimately was to turn into a 4-3-3 as Jordan Green moved into a more advanced position. But it didn't seem to do a lot to increase Yeovil's attacking threats, with Bury's strong possession being enough to keep Yeovil at bay, and to give them a comfortable half time lead.
The second period saw Yeovil gain what was to be their best chance of the game, after they recycled a free kick ten minutes into the half. Alex Fisher flicked the ball on inside the box, and Bevis Mugabi found his resultant shot turned over the crossbar by Joe Murphy for a corner kick. That was to start a brighter period for the Glovers, although their shooting was generally optimistic or wayward - a Tom James long-ranger went over the bar, before a pair of Jordan Green shots saw the ball sliced over the bar, then put tamely into Murphy's arms.
Bury looked to be trying to play a containment job, having got their noses ahead, and still had enough to create a few chances of their own as Caolan Lavery shot over the crossbar, whilst Will Aimson headed into the arms of Nathan Baxter from a Nicky Adams free kick. The introduction of Jake Gray and Yoann Arquin as substitutes didn't do a lot to heavily influence the way that Bury were slowing play down and keeping a degree of control.
Yeovil put another Tom James long range effort over the bar from 30 yards out, with the obvious problem being that none of their attacking players were getting chances anywhere near the Bury box. As a result, the Shakers felt in control for much of the game, even if Carl Dickinson almost provided a shock equaliser as he headed a 94th minute corner over the bar. That was the end of play, as a sparse Huish Park spent much of the second half injury time period repeating their calls for manager Darren Way to 'walk away' from the club. With the Glovers now dropping down to 22nd in the table, and just three points off the bottom two clubs, they know now that any extension of their winless run will give Notts County and Macclesfield Town an opportunity to get themselves out of trouble. The Yeovil Board need to take note of the perilous situation.
