Match Report:

Yeovil Town went down to their third defeat in four matches on Saturday afternoon, as basement side Macclesfield Town gained only their second win of the season. In a match in which both sides struggled to create chances, the game was won by a penalty from former Glover Michael Rose, who converted in the 72nd minute after Elliott Durrell was fouled inside the box. The Glovers were somewhat toothless throughout the game, although did have a first half Gary Warren header from a corner chalked off for a foul inside the box. They slip to 18th in the table, and six points away from the relegation spots.

The Glovers went into the match making five changes to their starting line-up from the team that lost to Stockport County in the FA Cup. French-Algerian Adel Gafaiti was a surprise name on the teamsheet, who was signed during the week and played as a centre-back, with Carl Dickinson dropping to the bench. Gary Warren came in as captain, with Shaun Donnellan coming off the teamsheet entirely. Stuart Nelson displaced Nathan Baxter in goal. Up front injuries meant that Olufela Olomola and Alex Fisher dropped out of the squad, with Francois Zoko and Yoann Arquin getting starts.

The first half saw Yoann Arquin get the ball in the back of the net early on, but the linesman's flag had gone up before he could convert, with an offside decision made. Wes McDonald fired in two shots as he cut in from the left flank, but both went wide of the target. Macclesfield were creating their own efforts on goal though, getting crosses into the box that saw Elliott Durrell fire a shot over the bar. There was then a dramatic moment when a low Danny Whitaker header was palmed away, single handed by Stuart Nelson, and looked to be heading over the goal-line. But thankfully the pace had been taken off the ball enough for Bevis Mugabi to hack it away off the line.

Then it was Macclesfield's turn to get the ball in the net as Harry Smith fired home from a Danny Whitaker flick-on. Once again the linesman's flag stopped any cheers from the home fans. As Macclesfield began to get on top of the match, Elliott Durrell was inches wide after a loose ball reached him on the edge of the box, with Yeovil not doing enough to cut out the initial crosses that flew into the box. The half finished with Gary Warren becoming the third player to get the ball in the back of net, with a Jake Gray corner landing on his head, but the whistle going for a foul somewhere. That corner had come from a Tom James 30 yard free kick that had been palmed over the bar, but it was hard to see where Yeovil were going to get a goal in open play.

Whilst the first period was rather open and at times chaotic, the second period was a much tighter affair, with fewer chances for both teams. One of Yeovil's best came from a Macclesfield player, with James Pearson inadvertantly firing a backpass with rather more venom than keeper Kieran O'Hara had expected. With the exception of the first half James free kick it was probably the best save he'd had to make all afternoon.

As the match disintegrated into a midfield battle, as players crowded each other out, Macclesfield got their noses in front thanks to two mistakes. Firstly Sessi D'Almeida gave the ball away in midfield, allowing Macclesfield the chance to break. Their main classy player Elliott Durrell broke into the box, and was recklessly fouled by Tom James, in his less familiar left-back role, and the Silkmen had a penalty kick. Up stepped former Glover Michael Rose to send Stuart Nelson the wrong way, and Macc were a goal up.

Yeovil made a series of late substitutions to try to get back into the match, with Rhys Browne, Korrey Henry and Omari Patrick all introduced as attacking outlets. But apart from a Browne effort from just outside the box, it didn't really ignite, with a lot of huff'n'puff football going on, and with Macclesfield putting players behind the ball in a manner that denied Yeovil space. It didn't help that when it came to the crunch, Macclesfield were more keen to win the loose second balls than Yeovil were throughout the majority of the second period, and for that reason, and the way the single goal developed, they deserved their three points in a scrappy poor quality game. Yeovil drop to 18th, and are looking a shadow of the side that played at Notts County and Newport from earlier in the season.
