Match Report:

Yeovil Town went down to defeat on Saturday afternoon despite a late rally against Morecambe at the Globe Arena. They were trailing by a couple of goals, after former Glover AJ Leitch-Smith fired into the top corner, followed by a goal from Rhys Oates early in the second period. Yeovil had been sluggish for the first hour, but when Scunthorpe United striker Olufela Olomola netted his third goal of the season, that set up a grandstand final 20 minutes. However, the Shrimps survived the late charge, with Omari Patrick hitting the post in second half injury time, meaning that Yeovil went down to a 2-1 defeat, slipping to 14th in the League Two table as a result.

The Glovers went into the match making three changes to last Saturday's line-up at Carlisle, with one forced and two tactical. Alex Fisher had a virus and so Yoann Arquin stepped into the front line. In midfield Jake Gray was preferred for Alex Pattison, with perhaps a hint that his head injury last week had seen his time on the training ground limited. On the wing, Wes McDonald made his first start since his hamstring injury, as Omari Patrick dropped to the bench.

The opening 25 minutes was one of acutely few chances, with only a Tom James header from a Rhys Browne cross noteworthy of action at the attacking end. Morecambe weren't much more active, but they scored with their opening chance of the game. A Liam Mandeville short pass into the box saw former Glover AJ Leitch-Smith turn past Shaun Donnellan and he fired a shot into the top corner for a 1-0 lead, to give the home side the upper hand.

That was enough to put Morecambe's tails up and they got themselves a bit of a soft penalty when Liam Mandeville was judged to have been pulled back by Sessi D'Almeida. That gave the Shrimps the chance to go two goals up but on this occasion, AJ Leitch-Smith's luck was out, as his penalty was saved by Nathan Baxter, who dived low to his right to push the ball out, with the rebound attempt going out for a corner. From that corner, Yeovil's funny five minutes continued as they failed to clear their lines properly, leading to Vadaine Oliver heading the ball into the back of the net - fortunately with a linesman's flag ruling that one out.

Yeovil contributed little in the first half of attacking intent but did at least finish the half in a brighter way, as Bevis Mugabi's volley from a Jake Gray corner was palmed for a second corner by Mark Halstead. Then Rhys Browne fired over the crossbar just before the final whistle blew with them just the single goal down.

Three minutes into the second half, Yeovil shot themselves in the foot by allowing Morecambe their second goal of the game. Giving the ball away on the halfway line, Rhys Oates gained possession and ran at the Glovers defence, who were guilty of allowing him the room to do so. When he reached 20 yards out, the wide man fired off a shot that took a bounce past goalkeeper Nathan Baxter, who seemed to misjudge the flight, and that ensured a 2-0 advantage for the Shrimps.

That was the signal for Alex Pattison to be introduced for Yeovil, replacing Jake Gray in the centre of the park. He fired over the crossbar after Rhys Browne had put him through, within a minute of arriving on the pitch. A long range Tom James free kick was saved by Mark Halstead, and suddenly Yeovil were starting to look the part for the first time in the match, with a previously quiet Wes McDonald shooting over on the counter-attack before the same player forced Halstead into a low save.

With 68 minutes on the clock, Yeovil's gradual climb back into playing better attacking football paid off when Yoann Arquin flicked on a ball up field, and it landed at the feet of an accelerating Olufela Olomola. The striker got in behind the Morecambe defence, before firing off a shot inside the box for his third goal of the 2018-19 season, and at 2-1 a foothold back into the match.

Morecambe introduced Kevin Ellison as a substitute, which might have caused some nerves, given his strike rate against Yeovil over the last few years. But instead the traffic was now flowing in one direction. Francois Zoko was introduced as an attacking outlet, making his comeback after a sixteen game absence, replacing Yoann Arquin. As the game drew to a close, two Tom James free kicks were parried by Mark Halstead, with the second almost creating an equaliser, but Shaun Donnellan's close range shot went over the crossbar and Morecambe escaped.

During second half injury time, Omari Patrick also went close as he hit the post inside a crowded goalmouth, with Morecambe somewhat clinging onto their single goal lead. But they managed to keep that advantage, with Yeovil having only really turned the screw in that final 30 minute period. The lesson was clear - don't give the opposition a two goal head start before you pick up the play, and even though they penned Morecambe in during the closing stages that was why they lost the game. They slip down to 14th in the table, with two cup matches taking attention elsewhere over the next seven days.
