Yeovil Town picked up a point in an end-to-end 2-2 draw at Huish Park on Saturday afternoon against Exeter City. The match was a typical West Country encounter, with both sides having chances to take all three points - the visitors took the lead when Jayden Stockley headed home a ninth minute cross. Yeovil had struggled to create first half chances, but early in the second half Jordan Green equalised as he finished an Olufela Olomola cross. It was another assist for Olomola 13 minutes later, as he allowed Alex Fisher a close range finish to put Yeovil ahead on the hour mark. But Exeter's crosses were dangerous throughout, and Jayden Stockley headed home his second goal of the day with 15 minutes left, to provide an entertaining but frustrating end to the match, and to leave Yeovil still in 15th place.
The Glovers went into the match making just one change to their starting line-up for Exeter's second visit of the season. Jake Gray was brought in for Yoann Arquin, with the midfielder initially occupying a wide left position in a 4-4-2. The other major news was the return of Gary Warren to the bench after his hamstring injury, but otherwise things were as you were. Aaron Martin and Nicky Law were in the Grecians starting line-up as former players making a return to Huish Park.
After a frenetic opening ten minutes, full of fierce tackles, typical of a local derby, Exeter got themselves an early lead through a bit of defensive indecision. Hiram Boateng was given far too much space in midfield during the first half and it was his ball into the box that floated in towards the six yard line. Bevis Mugabi challenged, but Jayden Stockley rose with more authority to head home past Nathan Baxter, who might wonder if he should have punched the ball away himself before it was headed home. 0-1 down.
Dean Moxey's turn inside the box forced Nathan Baxter to save, as Exeter imposed themselves on the game. Yeovil had the odd chance, but in the main they went nowhere near home keeper Christy Pym - Tom James shot wide from an Alex Fisher knockdown, and then an Alex Pattison header went comfortably wide of the target. James might have scored a superb free kick at Colchester on Tuesday night, but the least said about his free kick attempt midway through the first half, the better. Fisher put over the bar from distance, with his shot not getting as much dip on it as he would have liked. Their only shot on target was a fairly tame Fisher effort after Olufela Olomola set him up. They weren't out of it, but Exeter's approach play was superior, with the goal emphasising the key problem of how to stop crosses going in towards Stockley during the match.
Half time didn't see any obvious tactical changes, but it did bring an immediate change to the pattern of the match, as Yeovil equalised within three minutes of the restart. A poor back header by Luke Croll was intercepted by Olufela Olomola, and it was his driving run into the box that saw the ball squared to Jordan Green. He fired home for his third goal of the season, and a 1-1 equaliser.
That put Yeovil's tails up, and Croll had to provide better defensive work to stop Alex Fisher getting room to get a shot off, five minutes later as he tried to give himself room to shoot. But Croll wasn't having a good afternoon, and he was involved in the move on the hour mark, as he was undone by Olufela Olomola did him for pace as the Scunthorpe loanee ran towards goal. He squared the ball to Alex Fisher who got himself a two yard tap-in for his fifth goal of the season, and to put Yeovil 2-1 up.
Exeter's response was to immediately change their formation, taking off their holding midfielder Jordan Tillson and bringing on striker Jonathan Forte as they switched from a 4-3-3/4-5-1 approach to a standard 4-4-2. Yeovil continued to control the play, with Alex Fisher heading over the bar, and that made Exeter's equaliser, fifteen minutes from time a little frustrating. Once again it was the crossing into the box that caused the danger - Dean Moxey was the provider - and once again it was Jayden Stockley's aerial strength that saw him head home for a 2-2 equaliser.
Both sides tried for victory in the closing stages - Matt Jay came on for Exeter, whilst Rhys Browne replaced Jake Gray. During second half injury time came the only aggressive bit on the game, with Alex Pattison's fierce tackle earning him a booking, which caused a lot of pushing and shoving, with Sessi D'Almeida coming out with a yellow for himself on the back of that melee. Hiram Boateng came close to winning it in the 96th minute, when his shot span off Bevis Mugabi and out for a corner, but a point each was a fair outcome across the 90 minutes, keeping Yeovil in 15th place, with them now taking a break for two weeks in terms of League Two activity as part of an international break.
