Corby Town 0-3 Yeovil Town
Yeovil Goals: Jordan Green (22), Diallang Jaiyesimi (55), Korrey Henry (63)
Yeovil Town won their penultimate pre-season friendly on Saturday afternoon, as they eased their way past Southern League Division One East side Corby Town. In weather that veered from summer sunshine to torrential rain, and then back again, Jordan Green put his side in front midway through the first half. Norwich City loanee Diallang Jaiyesimi doubled the lead when he volleyed home ten minutes after the break, and that was quickly followed up by Korrey Henry converting from close range with his first touch after coming on as a substitute.
The Glovers made just a single change to their starting line-up compared to last weekend's match against Plymouth Argyle, with Tom James being left off the teamsheet entirely, meaning that Omar Sowunmi got back into the starting eleven, with Bevis Mugabi being pushed wide into the full-back position.
Corby provided competitive opposition, not unlike a League Two side in their style, pressing quickly and going into some biting tackles that provided the best test possible for the real thing next weekend. Although Yeovil passed the ball well, particularly when they switched the ball across field, there were a few occasions when they looked uncomfortable with aspects of the game they hadn't seen quite as much of in earlier friendlies. The best of the early efforts fell to Diallang Jaiyesimi, whose shot took a deflection over the Corby keeper, but was cleared off the line by a defender.
In gusty conditions, Francois Zoko shot, but straight into the arms of the goalkeeper 20 minutes into the match, but just a couple of minutes later Yeovil took the lead. Omar Sowunmi won the ball inside his own half and delivered it up through the centre. That gave Jordan Green a chance to run onto it, cutting inside before firing a shot home that bobbled in off the right hand post for a 0-1 lead.
Yeovil's best other effort, in a half where Corby struggled to get an attacking foothold, yet held their own in the centre of the park, came when they won a free kick after Jordan Green was brought down and the linesman belatedly flagged, with the delay almost looking like a VAR decision was being taken at Steel Park. Carl Dickinson stepped up and curled his effort around the wall, but the goalkeeper tipped the ball away for a corner.
The second period opened with Rhys Browne only lasting three minutes of it, as a block tackle immediately left him signalling to the bench. He was replaced by trialist Yoann Arquin, this time dubbed as Trialist A, and the only non-contracted player visible on the bench. He came close to netting when he flicked an angled shot over the bar from a Carl Dickinson through that looped into the box.
Ten minutes after the restart, Yeovil doubled their lead, A ball into the box was smartly chested down by Diallang Jaiyesimi and with a single touch, he volleyed the ball home from 12 yards out for a 0-2 lead, as the ball finished in the bottom corner.
Substitutions were inevitable around the hour mark, and that saw Alex Fisher, Reece Cole and Gabriel Rogers all introduced. It also saw former West Ham United utility player Korrey Henry get his chance to impress, and he got off to a flyer when with his first touch of the ball, he knocked in a Carl Dickinson corner from close range, for a 0-3 lead.
During the closing stages, Corby managed to please their home supporters, by forcing Stuart Nelson into two strong saves, as he managed to palm the ball over his own crossbar from driven shots down the centre. Tyrique Spencer-Clarke and Daniel Ojo got late appearances as Academy players during the final ten minutes, as legs were saved in what was a surprisingly competitive test from the Steelmen in what is likely to be Yeovil's last main 'First XI' friendly before the real thing starts next weekend at Bury. That the game finished when it did was a mercy - the second the game was over, thunderclaps and torrential rain came down to flood the pitch and stadium surrounds, meaning that not too many hung around once the final whistle blew.
