Match Report:

Yeovil Town gained a win in the first of their three EFL Trophy Group Stage matches, as they beat Exeter City 3-1 at St James Park tonight. All of the goals were scored during the second period, with AFC Bournemouth loanee Sam Surridge getting his first goal for the club within a minute of the restart. The game was put beyond doubt when two quick goals from Rhys Browne and Otis Khan put the Glovers into a three goal lead, and although City youngster Jack Sparkes pulled one back there was no late repeat of the horror show from last season, with the visitors coming home with three Trophy Group points. The only down side was that Southampton loanee Olufela Olomola didn't make it until half time, with an apparent dead leg forcing him off.

The Glovers went into the match making five changes to their starting line-up, as they rested a number of players. Connor Smith was the only forced one in that line-up, after he picked up a slight knock on Saturday, with Jake Gray replacing him. Otherwise, Tom James and Daniel Alfei came in at the back for Sid Nelson and Ryan Dickson, Jordan Green was preferred for Rhys Browne, and up front Francois Zoko got the night off with Sam Surridge replacing him.

The first half was a bit of a stop-start affair caused by two lengthy injuries. The first came after Jordan Green had gone in with a fierce challenge on Exeter left-back Luke Croll. That resulted in a five minute break, whilst the stretcher bearers - and ultimately an ambulance - was needed to get him off the pitch and off to hospital, although it wasn't 100 percent clear what Croll's injury was, although Exeter confirmed the purpose was to get an x-ray for him.

In terms of the football, it took a while for the Glovers to get going, despite having the first opportunity, as Jordan Green's effort was easily saved. At the other end, Artur Krysiak had to save a Jake Taylor angled effort. However, the keeper was well beaten by Reuben Reid strike on goal shortly afterwards - thankfully he saw the shot also beat his far post. Reid also saw another attempt on goal deflect off Bevis Mugabi and out for a corner.

It wasn't all one-way traffic at all - Jake Gray had one effort saved and another go wide, but in terms of the better efforts, Exeter looked the more likely to score. However, the half fizzled out a bit thanks to another lengthy injury issue, with Troy Archibald-Henville's over-zealous challenge hitting Olufela Olomola high up on his left leg. The Saints loanee did get back up and hobble around for a further seven minutes of play, but with it being clear he wasn't going to get through the game, he was withdrawn, with Rhys Browne entering the field as a right-winger meaning that Jordan Green pushed up to partner Sam Surridge.

That new front line partnership was to reap rewards within a minute of the half time break concluding. Jordan Green did the absolute damage, as his weaving run took him past a couple of defenders, before a short square of the ball gave Sam Surridge an easy tap-in from close range - the first goal for the AFC Bournemouth loanee since his arrival on loan, and a 0-1 lead.

Exeter nearly hit back straight away when Reuben Reid put Matt Jay through, but his shot went into the side netting, and the Grecians didn't look quite as interested as they did in the first half. Both sides were fortunate to finish with eleven men - whilst the two first half tackles that saw players injured had been tasty, the reaction of Rhys Browne and Jordan Moore-Taylor to a foul by the latter saw referee Oliver Langford having to intervene. Given Browne had appeared to put his hand in the Exeter player's face, he could have easily walke.

Instead, Rhys Browne proceeded to score Yeovil's second goal of the night 20 minutes later. He took advantage of a simple ball through the middle from Otis Khan and got in behind the Exeter defence, producing a confident finish to double the lead. Things got even better when three minutes later, Khan decided to do it all on his own - his run in from the flank took him via the byline where he finished from an impossible angle for a 3-0 lead.

Not that any Yeovil Town supporter who was at St James Park last season would count their chickens on a three goal lead with ten minutes remaining. Particularly when Exeter quickly pulled a goal back, as Jack Sparkes headed home a goal for Exeter for a 1-3 scoreline. Things could have looked a bit scary if Troy Archibald-Henville's header had not been cleared off the line by Tom James. Thankfully there was no repeat performance of last season's collapse, with Exeter having already made three substitutions, they were in no position to throw late strikers onto the pitch, and so Yeovil ran out as reasonably comfortable victors. On the plus side, the goals are being shared around all front line positions - on the minus side they better hope that Olufela Olomola's injury isn't too bad.
