Yeovil Town went down to a 4-1 defeat against Notts County this afternoon, with some sloppy second half defending contributing to their downfall. The Glovers stayed in the game until first half injury time when Daniel Jones struck a 25 yard shot that took a deflection on its way past Jonny Maddison. The Glovers goalkeeper would have been even more surprised when Tom James fired a County cross into his own net early in the second half, and with their back line losing its shape, Elliott Hewitt and Lewis Alessandra were able to add further goals from inside the box. Alex Fisher got the Glovers a 90th minute consolation via a free kick, but that didn't stop his side slipping to 19th, and still needing a single point to guarantee their Football League status.
The Glovers went into the game making three changes to their line-up which took to the field at Accrington Stanley. All three wingers were dropped with Jordan Green's advanced position being taken by Marcus Barnes. Meanwhile Jared Bird was brought in as an extra midfielder, with Bevis Mugabi as an extra defender, meaning that the dropping of Rhys Browne and Otis Khan meant that a formation change was on the cards, with a 5-3-2 line-up for the start of the match.
The early balance of the match was fairly even, with Jonathan Forte's shot from the edge of the box going just past the right-hand post. Then at the other end Lewis Wing's effort was accurate, but not fierce enough to worry Adam Collin. However, the game's first big chance fell to the Mapgies, as Forte lobbed the advancing Jonny Maddison with a superb effort that came off the crossbar. The loose ball was hooked off the line, but was then quickly recycled into the box, with a Matt Virtue shot from ten yards out being blocked by a defender.
That secondary play led to Shaun Donnellan ending up in the wars as he picked up a hefty whack on the head that saw four minutes of treatment - complete with a change of shirt and a head bandage he was passed as fit to continue. A second clash of heads slowed the game down even further, as Oscar Gobern and Shaun Brisley collided, creating a stop-start nature to the game, even if chances of Lewis Wing and an Alex Fisher header over the bar showed how Yeovil were definitely giving as good as they got.
Just as the game headed into seven minutes of injury time, Notts County were building up a head of steam that gave the feeling that Yeovil really needed the half time break. When the ball was fed across the edge of the area to Daniel Jones, he struck a superb shot that took a deflection off Omar Sowunmi and into the back of the net past Jonny Maddison, to give the Magpies a half time 1-0 advantage.
The second period started in a frenetic manner, with both sides committing unnecessary errors as they perhaps tried to play with too high a tempo for their own good. Oscar Gobern shot well over the bar, whilst there were a few moments where balls went across the face of the County box but without anyone getting near the end of it. Ten minutes into the half, a Yeovil player did in style, but unfortunately it was at the wrong end of the pitch. With play getting stretched, Liam Noble's ball across the face of the box saw Tom James side in, to try to intercept the ball. Instead he ended up getting a perfect boot on it, rifling a shot from the edge of the box and straight into his own net for a 2-0 scoreline.
If Yeovil had been in the game leading up to that moment, they were most certainly not in the game during the 20 minutes that followed. Although Darren Way chose that second goal to change his formation, by bringing on wingers Jordan Green and Rhys Browne, whilst withdrawing Shaun Donnellan and Oscar Gobern, to bring back a 4-4-2, the new look back line appeared to be all at sea in terms of their roles and responsibilities. That lack of organisation allowed Elliott Hewitt to move across inside the Yeovil penalty box from a move leading off a County throw-in, and he fired home from around the penalty spot for a 3-0 lead.
Things got worse for Yeovil, with Ryan Dickson off the field due to an ankle injury, replaced by Nathan Smith. A long punt up field by the Magpies goalkeeper was flicked into the path of Jonathan Forte. As the Glovers defence backed off from closing down his run on goal, he slipped a simple pass to the opposite rank, picking up Lewis Alessandra who fired home for a 73rd minute 4-0 scoreline.
Things could have easily got far worse in the closing stages, with Yeovil defenders visibly arguing with each other after another County attack, as their frustrations boiled over. Thankfully County didn't add any more - instead Yeovil did manage to get one of their own that their second half performance scarcely deserved, as Alex Fisher's low free kick, crept past the Notts County defensive wall for a 90th minute consolation, greeted by one of the quietest reactions you'll ever hear from a stunned Glovers away section that already knew the game had been lost, long before that moment. With Barnet winning, the wait for mathematical safety continues with just three games left of the season.
