Yeovil Town won their third consecutive League Two home match on Tuesday night after they beat Barnet by a 2-0 scoreline. Fans needed to be in the stadium for both the start and the end of the game, with a penalty from AFC Bournemouth striker Sam Surridge being netted less than two minutes into the match after the same player was fouled in the first move of the game. The division's basement side battled well in the second half, striking the post during the second half through substitute Mauro Vilhete, but it was Francois Zoko who bookended the match by scoring on the counter-attack with the final move of the match for his 12th goal of the season, to lift the Glovers up to 17th in the table.
The Glovers got off to the perfect start, getting themselves an opportunity to score within a minute from kick-off. Direct from Oscar Gobern's kick-off, they moved quickly forward, and when the ball fell to Sam Surridge inside the box, he was fouled by Barnet centre-back Ricardo Santos. Up stepped Surridge to take his own penalty kick, and to give his side a second minute 1-0 lead.
Against a team currently occupying the bottom of the Football League, inevitably the home side had plenty of confidence, with Barnet only occasionally threatening on the break. Simeon Akinola fired over the bar from the edge of the box, before Oscar Gobern did the same at the other end. Yeovil then had an excellent chance to extend their lead further, as Alex Fisher's shot was blocked, with the loose ball falling to Jake Gray. His attempt on goal was also blocked deem inside the box, with Jordan Green's attempt to follow up on the rebound not quite coming off.
Sam Surridge went close when he tried a first time conversion of a Corey Whelan cross into the box, with the shot clipping off the outside of the goal frame and going out for a goal kick. Realistically Barnet were not in the match, although a superb long range strike by Richard Brindley saw Jonny Maddison scrambling as the ball whistled just past the post. A reminder that no matter how good that start was, it was only a single goal advantage at the break.
Barnet came out far more sharply after the break. Richard Brindley fired just over the bar, whilst Alex Nicholls put one wide. Mistakes began to creep in as Omar Sowunmi gave the ball away, with Ryan Watson intercepting and putting away a shot that Jonny Maddison parried before Tom James mopped things up. The difficult start to the half also resulted in Francois Zoko picking up a yellow card - significant given that the FA will almost certainly be confirming it as his 10th booking of the season and a two match supension shortly.
It wasn't until the midway point of the half that Yeovil began to find their feet a bit, as Corey Whelan shot over the crossbar, quickly followed by Jake Gray's drive from the edge of the box that was parried, recycled and back to the same player who found his attempt blocked by a defender. Then Whelan fired towards the corner of the net, with his effort only denied by defender Richardo Santos as it skidded past keeper Craig Ross.
Barnet responded by bringing on Mauro Vihlete, and he almost scored with his first touch, with a shot that came off the goalpost, after Jonny Maddison parried his attempt. Maddison again was to the rescue, as he shone during his first start of the season, getting down low to his left to push a David Tutonda attempt around the post for a corner. Then the keeper pushed a Richard Brindley drive over the crossbar, with the question being how long Yeovil could hold out in the match. Shaquile Coulthirst saw another goalbound attempt cleared off the line by Tom James, with Barnet pushing both wingers and strikers up to pressurise the Glovers back line.
Then came the 93rd minute sucker punch. With numbers camped in one half, the ball was cleared up the park to Francois Zoko. He shrugged off the attention of Charlie Clough, to race through on goal, and slot the ball past Craig Ross for a 2-0 victory with the last kick of the game, and an extremely valuable three points. Once again, it wasn't the most comfortable of victories, but with the last three home matches having given the club nine points, that is what they will need once they hit the final dozen games, when they stand to finish the season playing nearly all of the division's big guns.
