Yeovil Town went down to a late defeat this afternoon, after a Kristian Dennis goal in second half injury time saw them lose their third League Two match in four games. The Glovers had created the greater number of chances during the game, but fell behind midway through the second half when a Louis Reed free kick flew in. The Glovers looked to have rescued the game when Lewis Wing's long range strike levelled things with ten minutes to go. But during injury time Dennis broke through, and in the aftermath Otis Khan was red carded, having disputed the decision, with reports claiming that he had 'barged' the referee - if proven then he would be facing a lengthy ban, ruling him out of next weekend's match against his boyhood club Manchester United.
The Glovers went into the match making one change to their starting line-up as Omar Sowunmi dropped entirely out of the squad, with illness given as the explanation for his absence. Bevis Mugabi replaced him at the back. On the bench, Marcus Barnes was also absent with an ankle injury seeing him temporarily return to Southampton for an estimated six weeks worth of treatment. That left just a five man bench. In the opposition, Sid Nelson returned to his former club for the first time.
The first half got off to a quiet start with neither team really threatening the goal. When play did finally warm up, all of the opportunities came from Yeovil Town, albeit without truly working the goalkeeper. Francois Zoko worked past a defender before seeing a deflected shot go into the arms of the keeper, then Jordan Green had a similar outcome when Sid Nelson got in the way of his shot, taking the sting off the ball. Jared Bird shot wide, followed by Ryan Dickson, with the Spireites employing a defensive guard to smother Yeovil attacks.
It took Chesterfield over 35 minutes to get near the goal. A Tom James back header was intercepted by Chris O'Grady, but he didn't really get his boot on the ball, as Artur Krysiak made his first save of the day. Still Yeovil had opportunities to open the scoring, but were largely struggling to hit the target - Francois Zoko's ambitious attempt from an Otis Khan corner flew over the bar on the first touch, followed by Jake Gray's shot being blocked by Sid Nelson, and Khan putting his own attempt well over. The Glovers were in control, but in a game that had been getting increasingly scrappy and flat in its tone.
The second half opened with more of the same, with Sam Surridge heading wide from a Tom James cross, before Francois Zoko wasted a good opportunity, having been set up by Ryan Dickson running half the length of the pitch, laying the ball off to the striker.
Chesterfield had again offered little, with just an Antony Kay shot going well over. But they took the lead when Yeovil conceded an unnecessary free kick just over an hour into the match when miscommunication between Jordan Green and Bevis Mugabi led to the latter fouling Joe Rowley. Up stepped Louis Reed and the ball flew direct into the net from 20 yards out for a classic away side smash'n'grab style goal.
It was now up to Yeovil to chase the game against a defensive Chesterfield side, and for periods they didn't look as though they were going to do it. But the introduction of Lewis Wing just after the opening goal had a clear impact as the midfielder appeared to have rescued a point ten minutes from time. He struck a 25 yard curling shot into the back of the net that came out of the blue, pulling the game back to 1-1.
Briefly, it looked as though Yeovil Town would be hammering on the door for the winning goal, with Otis Khan forcing the Chesterfield keeper Aaron Ramsdale into a parried save, before he also palmed a Tom James free kick away. Ramsdale then stopped a Bevis Mugabi header. But Chesterfield had one more throw of the dice, bringing on top goalscorer Kristian Dennis with seven minutes remaining.
During second half injury time that was to prove decisive. Yeovil Town have had a bad habit of conceding late goals in League Two matches. When Otis Khan appeared to be fouled in the middle of the park, but when the ball broke to Dennis he was clean through on goal. With play frozen, Dennis was the only person who reacted, and he took advantage of Artur Krysiak racing out of his goal, to slot the ball home for a 93rd minute goal and a 1-2 winner.
In the aftermath, Otis Khan was issued a red card, for what was reported as being a barge on referee Kevin Johnson, objecting to the lack of the decision made by the official. That will leave the Glovers with their seventh red card of the season, and another suspension in what could be Khan's final act for the club. It also leaves the club just two points off the relegation zone, with Forest Green and Chesterfield pulling closer to them at the end of the day.
