Match Report:

Yeovil Town went down to their fifth away defeat in six league games this afternoon, as Newport County picked up a comfortable 2-0 win at Rodney Parade. The Glovers were never really in the game, and lost the points due to two corner kicks from former midfielder Matt Dolan. his delivery into the box allowed Padraig Amond to score just before the break, and ten minutes into the second half Joss Labadie got on the end of a corner from the same player as the Welsh side dominated. The best chance for the Glovers came in second half injury time when Olufela Olomola hit the crossbar but by then they were well beaten.

The Glovers went into the match making two changes to their starting line-up with Nathan Smith coming in for Omar Sowunmi, who surprisingly dropped entirely out of the first team squad, one game after he'd been recalled directly into the first eleven. The other replacement was Connor Smith, who came in for Jake Gray, with Smith having missed playing time recently through illness. In the opposition line-up, Ben Tozer and Matt Dolan both started, meaning that this was a game of old boys versus new boys in the centre.

Newport lined up in a 3-5-2 formation, and it was their wing-backs and others moving into wide positions that dominated the game against Yeovil's more narrow 4-3-3 formation. Early on, Ben White put over the crossbar. That was followed up by Matt Dolan dispossessing Matt Worthington, which saw him cross into the box, but Padraig Amond's header went over the bar as well. The Exiles then went close as Joss Labadie spurned an effort six yards out as he too put over the crossbar when he really should have buried it.

Yeovil's chances were few and far between, but Francois Zoko produced an effort out of nothing as he cleverly turned his man and saw his shot deflected off a defender's boot, with Joe Day doing brilliantly to deal with the ball as it span in the opposite direction. But in the main it was the home side that had the greater intent.

That said, it did look as though the Glovers had weathered the storm right up until the point that the board went up for three minutes of added time before the break. Matt Dolan's free kick caused problems in the box and was deflected out for a corner. With the pressure now back on the Glovers defence, Dolan's corner kick was spot on, and allowed Padraig Amond the chance to head home for a goal that the home side deserved, and one that had come at a crucial point in the game.

Instead of Yeovil coming out after the break fired up, it was more of a case of Newport upping the gears as Joss Labadie's header from a Dolan free kick was saved by Artur Krysiak, with Frank Nouble thankfully firing the loose ball wide of the posts. Then Labadie shot over the bar from Nouble's cross. As such it wasn't much of a surprise when Newport doubled their lead. Once again Dolan was the instigator, once again it was a corner, and once again it was a well planted header. Labadie, who could have had a hat-trick before that moment finally got on the scoresheet for a 2-0 advantage.

Newport could have sat back and enjoyed their lead, but instead they showed great intent to try to get their third. Yeovil's opportunities were few and far inbetween with only a long range Tom James free kick that sailed high and wide and another set piece that peacefully floated into the keeper's arms getting near their box. It was nearly three when a long range Joe Day goal kick saw Padraig Amond latch onto the ball, with the Yeovil defence sleeping. Amond's shot was well saved by Artur Krysiak who was the one player who stayed alert.

A Mickey Demetriou free kick whistled narrowly wide of the post, just after Dolan had been withdrawn to a standing ovation. That was the theme of the closing stages, with Newport having the luxury of withdrawing both goalscorers as Padraig Amond and Joss Labadie also left to big applause. Yeovil tried to introduce their own substitutes with Rhys Browne, Sam Surridge and Alefe Santos all coming on, but without any real coherence as to how they would change the game. In the end Yeovil's best chance came during second half injury time when Francois Zoko set up Olufela Olomola but the Southampton loanee's shot came back off the crossbar. Yeovil came out with nothing, and nothing was what they deserved.
