Yeovil Town let slip a two goal lead tonight, as two late Morecambe goals saw their problems of last season rear their ugly head again. All seemed to be going well for the Glovers when Francois Zoko netted his fourth goal of the season, and that was added to midway through the second half as AFC Bournemouth loanee Sam Surridge scored his first goal for the Glovers. But a minute later, the home nerves were back again as Adam McGurk pulled a goal back, and for the third season running Kevin Ellison proved a thorn in Yeovil's side by scoring the final goal of the game to end the match with a 2-2 draw, meaning that two points were very much thrown away.
The Glovers went into the match making four changes to the line-up that played against Cheltenham on Saturday. One of those was forced with Olufela Olomola ruled out due to his ongoing leg injury - he was replaced by Sam Surridge. Bevis Mugabi was swapped for Tom James, whilst in midfield there was a bit of reshuffling with Jake Gray filling a wide right position in the place of Rhys Browne, whilst Alefe Santos got his first start as Connor Smith dropped out. In the opposition line-up, the familiar face of Michael Rose occupied a defensive midfield position.
The match was played in end-to-end blustery windy conditions that Yeovil had behind their backs in the first half as they attacked the away end of the ground. Their early shots from Otis Khan and Alefe Santos - one over the bar, and one wide of the posts - suggested the pre-match instruction was to shoot on sight and to use the conditions to their advantage. Whilst that was certainly the theme for the opening 15 minutes, things began to dry up a bit after that, with the Morecambe keeper not really being tested.
The visitors, who had begun tentatively, gradually grew into the game, with Kevin Ellison firing wide of the target on the break. Then Artur Krysiak had to save at the feet of Aaron Wildig after Ryan Dickson had lost his footing, allowing the Morecambe man to break through. It was beginning to look as though the Lancashire side were getting on top of the game.
All of that changed, just after Francois Zoko had livened things up at the other end. He was fed by Sam Surridge, and unleashed a shot that came back off the crossbar, with Surridge not really getting enough power on the rebound header to worry Morecambe keeper Barry Roche. But eight minutes before the break, Zoko was alert to spot a defensive howler from Dean Winnard. The centre-back's backpass was far too weak to reach Roche - Zoko pounced and intercepted the ball, rounding the keeper and slotting into an empty net for a 1-0 lead.
That was enough to send Yeovil in at the break with the advantage - the question was whether they would see that as advantage enough to cope with the elements against them. The answer appeared to be yes, when Yeovil started the second period playing sensibly - passing the ball on the deck in a manner that probably would have helped their first half play. They also produced the move of the match 20 minutes into the second period by grabbing their second goal of the night. Jake Gray's right wing run and cross found Sam Surridge in the centre and he slotted home into the far corner for a 2-0 lead.
Unfortunately, that two goal advantage was also the moment things started to unravel. A minute later, a Michael Rose throw-in was flicked on at the near post, and bounced around Yeovil's goal area. It wasn't cleared, and Adam McGurk lashed the ball home for a 2-1 scoreline. It also inevitably put Morecambe's tails up, with Kevin Ellison shooting just over the bar minutes later.
The away side changed their formation to a flat 4-4-2 during the second period to match up Yeovil, and that also seemed to tip the balance of play. They were to equalise with 13 minutes remaining and once again Michael Rose provided the set play that did it. His corner was swung in, and Kevin Ellison nodded the ball home from six yards out for a 2-2 scoreline.
Ellison - who has scored in three consecutive Huish Park visits now - could have won the match when he broke through with five minutes remaining, but his shot went over the bar. A mass of late substitutions for both sides saw each manager try to swing things their way, but the end result for Yeovil was one of frustration, with two points dropped from a two goal cushion. When that is witnessed by the club's record Football League low crowd of just 2,205, that is not the way to win the punters back. It was a brighter performance than Saturday's game against Cheltenham, but it was still the same outcome, as Yeovil struggled again to see off another club below them.
