Yeovil Town sunk to their third consecutive away league defeat this afternoon, as a Crawley Town side picked up their first back-to-back wins for seven months in a 2-0 scoreline at the Broadfield Stadium. Yeovil's defending didn't help themselves as two key errors saw Jordan Roberts get a goal in each half - the first from a poor crossfield pass that was intercepted, and the second from a goal kick that was returned directly into the path of danger with Roberts able to capitalise on both occasions. Yeovil's attacking performance gradually ran out of ideas despite a good early start, with the home side deserving their win.
With the EFL Trophy tie against Exeter City in midweek having produced a win after five changes had been made, the question was whether Darren Way would stick with that side, or change back to the team that had won against Coventry. The answer was that the players who had won the League Two match got the nod - rather precisely in fact, with the exact same eleven and exact same substitutes being employed. That meant Omar Sowunmi sat out for the third consecutive game, whilst Dan Alfei missed his second league match in a row, with latest signing Matt Worthington not considered for selection, having spent most of the week down in Dean Court. Crawley's line-up included former Glover Lewis Young, with striker Matt Harrold having missed out on meeting his former club due to his deadline day move to Leyton Orient.
Considering the way the game was going to pan out, Yeovil started the match in a fluent attacking way, getting in behind the Forest Green back line on two or three occasions during the opening ten minutes. Pick of the chances was a Francois Zoko ball across the box that just needed a touch from an in-rushing Olufela Olomola, or indeed any Crawley defender for it to get in the back of the net. It missed everyone.
The warning signs from the home side began to materialise when Jordan Roberts fired just wide on the angle of the area, and then Enzio Boldewijn saw his breakthrough on goal blocked by the legs of Artur Krysiak. But 12 minutes into the game, the Glovers shot themselves in the foot by sloppy play inside their own half. Connor Smith's attempt to pass the ball out from his own half was easily intercepted by Jimmy Smith, and his ricocheted touch found its way to Roberts, who slotted home a low shot into the bottom right hand corner from the edge of the box. 1-0 down.
The home side continued to assert themselves strongly. An Enzio Boldewijn first time effort on goal after a Crawley free kick was flicked on, was blocked well by Krysiak, whilst Millwall loanee Sid Nelson produced a superb flying full body block on a Jordan Roberts shot to stop him getting his second of the afternoon from close range. The flow of the game wasn't being helped by a series of injuries - four minutes of added time showed the way that had totted up the period in which players had been standing around - at one point two Crawley players lay injured on the deck which wasn't helping Yeovil either. It made for a stop-start end to the half.
Connor Smith, whose error had led to the goal, was replaced at half time by Jake Gray. But six minutes into the second period, another hopelessly soft goal saw Yeovil concede again. Artur Krysiak's goal kick drifted over to the left side, and only just across the line before former Glover Lewis Young returned a first time volley down the right touchine. Yeovil's defence looked to have collectively gone to sleep. Enzio Boldewijn got acres of room to chase the ball down, and when he produced a low squared ball into the centre, Jordan Roberts got an easy tap-in from close range to give Crawley a 2-0 advantage.
Crawley could have easily had a third goal six minutes later when Jimmy Smith was guilty of an awful miss - his connection from a yard out after a Crawley Town free kick was put in at the back post saw the ball go over the crossbar, despite having half the goal to aim at. Yeovil's chances on goal were even more scarce than in the first half, with one of their more worthy efforts coming when an Otis Khan free kick was challenged for by Nathan Smith, resulting keeper Glenn Morris being distracted enough to make a meal of it and scoop the ball up in the air, but the loose ball was hacked away. Morris also punched an aerial ball onto his own crossbar under pressure, but when the ball came down, referee Trevor Kettle blew up for a foul, which looked justified.
Jordan Green replaced a tired looking Olufela Olomola, and he worked hard in the 25 minutes that he got, although the best he managed was a shot into the side netting from a narrow angle. Bevis Mugabi also had a header from a corner blocked by a Crawley defender, but the feeling was that any hope that Yeovil had of getting back into the match was fizzling out, with Crawley looking ever more comfortable with their own efforts to smother the game. There could be few complaints about the final outcome.
