Yeovil Town dropped to a damaging single goal defeat against fellow relegation strugglers Newport County this afternoon, as their poor run of form continued. The Glovers succumbed to a Mickey Demetriou free kick 12 minutes into the second half in a scrappy match. The Exiles are the team in form, and they had the upper hand for much of the game, with them struggling to break their opponents down during the closing stages, leaving them on the end of a 1-0 defeat and now just four points off the drop zone.
The Glovers went into the match making five changes to the team that took to the field at against Portsmouth last weekend. Goalkeeper Artur Krysiak was injured so his place was taken by Jonny Maddison who was making his league debut. Nathan Smith captained the side on his 250th appearance, as Bevis Mugabi sat on the bench. Up front, Tom Eaves was displaced by Omar Sowunmi, whilst Otis Khan came in for Brandon Goodship. Ryan Dickson had recovered enough from his injury to replace Tom James.
The match was played on a poor pitch, but it was clear right from the offset that Newport knew how to deal with it far better, largely pinning Yeovil into their own half during the opening 20 minutes. The first sign of danger in a poor quality first half came when Mark Randall swung in a free kick that a sea of bodies went for, but Maddison did well to firmly pluck out of the air to give him early confidence. Mitch Rose sliced well over the bar before Yeovil got their first effort on goal, as an Alex Lacey header was palmed over the bar by Joe Day.
Mitch Rose fired over the bar again, whilst former Glover Ryan Bird directed a good near post header towards goal only to find Maddison in the right place to cover the attempt. There was then a goalmouth scramble as Yeovil failed to clear their lines with it being clear that whilst there weren't many clearcut chances in the match, the vast majority were falling Newport's way - thankfully on this occasion the ball ricocheted to safety.
At the end of a frustrating first half, players own frustrations boiled over when Otis Khan and Mark Randall got involved in a bit of afters, leading to a melee of players that were eventually separated by the referee and by a yellow card each. It wasn't pretty by any stretch of the imagination, with the half ending with a spot of hoofball that made you wonder if we were back in the days of Dean Chandler in a Yeovil shirt.
Yeovil had one bright spell early in the second half that led to an Otis Khan attempt going over the crossbar. But just shot of the hour mark, Ryan Bird won a free kick five yards outside the box after he was brought down by Matt Butcher. The defensive wall was questionable, and when Mickey Demetriou curled it around the left side, there was enough of a gap for it to end up low in the corner of Jonny Maddison's net.
The Glovers tried to respond by introducing Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro and Shayon Harrison, and the former put in a brave header from one set piece that went just wide, getting a serious bash on the nose for his troubles that saw him leave the field for around five minutes. When Alex Lawless replaced Matt Butcher in the closing stages, it was hard to see how that was intended to change the course of the match, with the team's overall pattern looking somewhat rudderless in its shape, and without too much pressure being put on the Newport goal.
Not even six minutes of injury time could chance that, despite Nathan Smith looping a header just over the bar deep into that period. When the final whistle blew, the players looked despondant, whilst the 396 present made their feelings known at what had been a bit of a lifeless closing stage to the match. With two wins in 23 matches now, and just four points off the drop zone, the Glovers badly need a win from somewhere. It may be that the teams below them run out of games before the end of the season, but they can't afford to rely upon that now.
