Match Report:

Yeovil Town picked up their third home win in a row this afternoon, as a single goal once again proved to be the difference between themselves and Newport County. The crowd had to be patient throughout a game of few chances, with the 1-0 scoreline secured when substitute Tom Eaves was credited with a close range finish after Ryan Hedges won the ball inside the box, even if video footage suggests it will eventually go down as a Dan Butler own goal. Both sides struggled to test the goalkeepers in a game played in rainy slippery conditions, but that single goal allowed the Glovers to climb up to the dizzy heights of 15th in the League Two table.

The Glovers went into the match naming an unchanged starting line-up - a definite rarity during the 2016-17 season. On the bench they were also able to co-opt three of their more experienced players, with Ryan Dickson, Francois Zoko and Tom Eaves all returning from recent illness and injuries. The Newport side had plenty of familiar faces, with Ben Tozer and Josh Sheehan in midfield, and Jack Compton sat on the bench.

The first half saw both sides struggle to test the goalkeepers significantly, even if Newport started off with a head of steam that they couldn't possibly maintain across the whole distance, thrusting players forward as they charged into the box on the end of fairly direct looking balls. At the other end Otis Khan had a shot deflected wide of the target, before Matt Dolan put one over the bar, with the midfielder later forcing a corner as his shot was deflected wide off a defender's boot. Dan Butler and Sean Rigg had chances for Newport, but once Yeovil weathered that early storm, the match died down and Yeovil began to get on the ball a lot more albeit without any big chances, with the most notable thing being the driving rain that began to turn the game a bit scrappy in the closing stages of the half. Yeovil looked more polished than their opponents but only a Ryan Hedges attempt had actually tested Joe Day between the sticks.

The second period implied more of the same, although it took a long time for Yeovil to build up momentum, with Newport looking fleetingly dangerous during the early stages. Thankfully they didn't have their shooting boots on, with Jennison Myrie-Williams seeing his fine run ending in embarrassment as he sliced a shot so wide it looked closer to a crossing attempt. Then former Glover Ben Tozer, whose long throw-ins had been a feature of the first half, showed that he was pretty handy on the right flank as he pulled in a cross that Scot Bennett headed over the crossbar.

Yeovil made tactical substitutions, with Tom Eaves replacing Tahvon Campbell, and then later Francois Zoko coming on for Otis Khan. The latter change initially looked like a 4-3-3 but at one point Zoko moved into a central position, with Ryan Hedges behind the front two and it was during this period that Yeovil got their crucial goal. A cross from Ryan Hedges was bobbled across the face of goal, and the big question was whether Tom Eaves had got the vital touch on the ball - as was announced over the tannoy, and given out by Opta to the likes of Sky and BBC - or whether defender Dan Butler put it into his own net.

The cast iron certainty though was that Yeovil were 1-0 up, and Newport had ten minutes plus five additional minutes of injury time to change that. At the other end though, it was Yeovil who had the best chance to score the next goal, with Francois Zoko breaking clean through, only for a superb save by Joe Day to deny him. The same two players were involved in another more basic save, and Newport couldn't really carve out anything during those closing stages to look worrying. The end result was that they ended the day five points adrift at the foot of the table, whilst the Glovers climbed up to a dizzy looking 15th place in the table - four points off the relegation line if you're a pessimist, and three points off the play-offs if you're an optimist. Welcome to mid-table, Yeovil Town!
