Yeovil Town's habit of getting involved in low scoring fixtures continued as they drew 0-0 against Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park tonight. Playing against a side who last scored more than one goal in a game on February 9th, the Glovers - who last scored more than a single goal in a game back in January - battled well with first half chances from Francois Zoko and Connor Roberts, but were indebted to captain Ryan Dickson during the second period. He was well placed to head an Aaron Pierre header off the line on the one occasion that Artur Krysiak was beaten, for the home side's best chance. Even so, the Glovers could have won it themselves during second half injury time when Marc Laird was put clean through on goal, but he shot wide of the target, and that meant that both sides had to settle for a point each.
The Glovers went into the match making four changes to their starting line-up, as Darren Way rotated his squad again. One of those was semi-forced, with club safety meaning that Jakub Sokolik was pulled out of the squad due to his ongoing wrist problems, with Alex Lacey replacing him. In midfield, Ben Tozer came in for Liam Shephard, whilst up front there were a pair of changes, with Tahvon Campbell and Leroy Lita brought in for Jack Compton and Brandon Goodship. The latter became the 'sixth loanee' once again, with Harry Cornick coming back onto the substitutes bench.
Right-back Connor Roberts got in a strong early shot as he got plenty of space on the right flank, and the same area of the park was exposed again five minutes later, with Leroy Lita strong enough to shrug off the challenge of a couple of defenders. However, his final shot was on the angle meaning that Ryan Allsop was able to cover on the angle. At the other end, Jerell Sellars fired wildly over the bar, whilst Michael Harriman's own free kick was recycled to the same player, but he found his attempt on goal tipped away for a corner. Overall, it was a half of extremely few chances - Yeovil probably edged it in terms of the football, but once again struggled with the chances, bar the two early attempts where they managed to get stand-in left-back Sido Jombati on his wrong foot.
Inevitably with Wycombe needing all three points to stay in play-off contention, the game gradually opened up as the second half progressed. Marcus Bean produced a strong driven shot that Artur Krysiak saw all the way, and ensured that he did a classic 'one for the cameras' goalkeeping save to put the ball over the bar. Then at the other end Ryan Dickson created Yeovil's best chance as his shot forced Ryan Allsop to stretch and fingertip the ball away for a corner. On the whole though, both sides were defending extremely well, with Liam Walsh's shot being blocked by the full body of Sido Jombati as he tried to tee one up from the edge of the box.
In the closing stages, the game went full end-to-end. Ryan Dickson had to clear off his own line from an Aaron Pierre header, via one of many corners that Wycombe forced during the second period. Then Yeovil counter-attacked superbly, with Matt Dolan setting free substitute Harry Cornick, but his final shot went wastefully wide of the target. Both sides could have won the game during injury time - Michael Harriman's effort through a crowd of players was well spotted by Artur Krysiak and parried away, with Nathan Smith mopping up the danger. Then came the chance to win the game - substitute Ryan Bird was set away, and he fed Marc Laird who was counter-attacking and clean through on goal. It should have been a last-gasp winner but instead it was fired wide of the target and that rather summed up Yeovil's problem in a nutshell - great approach play, great movement, but without that man who can finish it off. A point that lifted them above Morecambe tonight after they were thrashed 7-0, but still the major failing of the Glovers play is obvious for all to see.
