Yeovil Town lifted themselves off the bottom of the League Two table this afternoon, as they gained a hard-working single goal victory over York City. In a match involving two of the divisions bottom three sides, the two teams were ultimately separated via the penalty spot, with Matt Dolan firing home first first goal since the opening day of the season when he converted from twelve yards - awarded after Francois Zoko was judged to have been fouled by Luke Summerfield inside the box. The win, which broke a run of sixteen League Two games without a victory, allowed Yeovil to leapfrog their opponents, but Dagenham's second consecutive win meant that they kept themselves two points ahead of the Glovers and thus still the team to catch.
The Glovers went into the match with Darren Way selecting the same starting eleven as last weekend, in what was Way's first match in charge since being unveiled as the club's new permanent manager. The only two changes were on the bench, with striker Ryan Bird having recovered from a dead leg sustained at Plymouth on Boxing Day, whilst new loan signing Tahvon Campbell sat on the bench after completing his paperwork from his parent club West Bromwich Albion on the morning of the game. In the opposition line-up goalkeeper Scott Flinders and midfielder James Berrett came up against their former club.
There was an early penalty appeal in the game, after a Jack Compton shot deflected off the arm of a York defender from distance, with referee James Linington presumably deciding the visiting player couldn't get out of the way. At the other end, Vadaine Oliver shot wide as he occupied a lone striker role with York flooding the midfield. The Minstermen probably edged the opening 30 minutes of the game, with a series of through balls not quite finding their men, with Oliver glancing another header wide that he was left stretching for.
During the fifteen minutes leading up to the break though, Yeovil began to sway the pendulum the other way, as Josh Sheehan forced Scott Flinders into his first save of the afternoon from a Connor Roberts cross, whilst Francois Zoko volleyed just over the bar after he took advantage of a Darren Ward flick-on inside the box from a Sheehan cross. With five minutes before the break, Yeovil got the break that they needed when Luke Summerfield challenged from behind on Zoko inside the box, and the striker fell to the floor, with referee James Linington pointing to the penalty spot. Up stepped Matt Dolan from twelve yards and he fired down the middle with Scott Flinders having already dived to one side.
That was the last action of a half that Yeovil hadn't exactly dominated, but on the other hand York hadn't forced Artur Krysiak into a single save. That was pretty much the same pattern of the majority of the second half, even if a Bradley Fewster shot just ten seconds into the second period saw the ball deflect off a Yeovil body and away. Then Danny Galbraith breezed through the centre of the park, and fired off a shot from 20 yards out, with defenders and midfielders giving him too much room - something that Krysiak made it clear he wasn't happy about.
Overall though, York didn't threaten too much, and Yeovil didn't look like adding to their lead, until the closing stages when both sides began to make a series of substitutions that saw the Minstermen throw men forward, allowing the Glovers a chance to counterattack with pace. One of the players introduced was Baggies striker Tahvon Campbell, for an ineffective Shaun Jeffers, and he was involved when a challenge on Shaun Jeffers saw the keeper drop the ball and Francois Zoko's shot half blocked for a corner.
As the game ticked towards the 90th minute, York made loud appeals for a penalty when Kenny McEvoy took a tumble under pressure from Jakub Sokolik. Referee James Linington didn't please McEvoy by booking him for diving for the spot kick, with York's players growing increasingly tetchy as the clock wound down. The Glovers could have sealed it far more easily on an injury time breakaway - first Francois Zoko, then Tahvon Campbell were denied by Scott Flinders, and as the ball ran loose Matt Dolan put over the bar. York's gambling by pushing men up also resulted in Josh Carson's dreadful foul on Iffy Allen as he broke clear towards goal that gave him a yellow card, and ensured that four minutes injury time was used up fairly efficiently from a Yeovil point of view. The single goal was all we got, and with Krysiak having a comfortable afternoon bar some late York pressure, that was all they needed, although Dagenham and Redbridge's win merely emphasises how much those three points were needed in truth.
