Yeovil Town fell to the bottom of the Football League tonight as a single goal from Wycombe Wanderers midfielder Luke O'Nien dealt a crucial blow to their hopes of turning their form around. The Chairboys have one of the best away records in the division, and they showed why by waiting for Yeovil to make mistakes and then catching them efficiently on the break during a first half that saw Chris Weale rescue them on several occasions. The game was sealed when O'Nien fired from 20 yards with an excellent curling effort that gave Weale no chance, and from there onwards the visitors snuffed Yeovil out for a 0-1 result that was a bit too comfortable for their own good. Dagenham's win at AFC Wimbledon puts Yeovil bottom of the Football League as the bottom pair swap positions, showing the magnitude of the club's fall over the past two years.
Yeovil went into the match fielding the same eleven that had started against Newport County on the weekend, with the only change being that Jakub Sokolik was added to the substitutes bench, giving a full set of save players. That included Coventry City striker George Thomas, whose one month loan deal expired on the weekend, but was cleared to take a position on the bench. Sokolik and Thomas and the sparse 2,963 crowd watched an inert opening 15 minute spell during which neither side managed to create a chance.
Matters finally began to warm up midway through the half, although it was more through Yeovil's nervous jitters than through Wycombe's incisive play. Alex Lacey mis-kicked the ball and that allowed Garry Thompson to break through - thankfully Chris Weale continued where he left off on Saturday with an excellent save for a corner. From that set piece, Harry Cornick was well positioned on the goal post to clear off the line. That was followed by another defensive error that let through Luke O'Nien on goal. When he crashed to the floor inside the box under Chris Weale's challenge, Huish Park held its breath but referee Darren Deadman was unmoved - until Ben Tozer squared up to O'Nien, accusing him of diving, which earned Tozer a booking.
It took a while for Yeovil to settle down from that fifteen minute period in which they threatened to shoot themselves in the foot, but eventually they finished the half well - a Francois Zoko effort was saved, and then goalkeeper Matt Ingram had to work hard to tip a Ryan Bird shot over the crossbar. But still individual errors threatened to be their undoing - again Garry Thompson wasn't tracked, again he ran through on goal, but again Chris Weale superbly anticipated the danger, running off his line to block the ball and keep the score goalless at half time.
Early second half action saw Harry Cornick almost catch Wycombe sleeping after the half time break. But on the whole Wycombe looked more organised during the second period, and it was easy to see why they'd only conceded four goals on their travels this season. As Ryan Bird and Francois Zoko tired, so did Yeovil's impetus up front. Matt Dolan had a stuttering game, and he was replaced by Ryan Dickson, prompting a midfield reshuffle that saw Harry Cornick switch to the right flank and Wes Fogden move into the centre. Occasionally there were little flashes, with Matt Ingram having to punch away from a dangerous cross with both Ryan Bird and Darren Ward charging in. Then Ben Tozer broke clear but he shot too early from the edge of the box allowing Ingram an easy save.
That brief flurry was snuffed out with 20 minutes remaining when Luke O'Nien produced the killer blow that would win the match. Aaron Holloway laid the ball off to the midfielder who got plenty of space, and he struck a superb shot from the edge of the box that curled past Chris Weale to give the Chairboys a 0-1 lead. That was immediately followed by Wycombe making a defensive substitution - very obviously emphasising their game plan.
George Thomas and Shaun Jeffers were introduced as fresh legs to replace Ryan Bird and Francois Zoko up front, and the Coventry City man did produce one impressive moment as he threaded the ball through to Ryan Dickson who was clean through on goal, but once again Matt Ingram stopped the equaliser, with a superb save. Then in injury time, Yeovil did actually beat Ingram at last, only to find centre-back Aaron Pierre heading off his own goal line after the keeper made a rare error in coming out for, and missing, a free kick into the box from Ryan Dickson. But overall, Wycombe defended their lead well, whilst a cutting edge eluded Yeovil - the reason why they will spend the rest of this week propping up the entire Football League.
