Yeovil Town crashed to a demoralising 3-0 defeat this afternoon at the hands of long-standing rivals Doncaster Rovers. The two clubs have followed each other up and down the divisions over the past fifteen years, but the gap between the two teams was a sizeable one at the Keepmoat Stadium as the home side won comfortably to send the Glovers bottom of League One. Rovers took the lead when Nathan Tyson tapped in from close range after Artur Krysiak had only parried Harry Forrester's shot midway through the first half. That scoreline was added to during the second period when Dean Furman was set up by Curtis Main's right wing run, whilst the match was polished off 13 minutes from time when Rovers broke away from a Yeovil corner, with Kyle Bennett giving them an easy win, in a game where Yeovil offered little as an attacking threat, and deservedly came home with nothing.
The Glovers went into the match missing a player they had not been without for over two years in a Football League match. Club captain Joe Edwards picked up an ankle injury at Crewe Alexandra, meaning that a 98 game run stretching back to the day that he signed permanently for the club was finally broken. His place in the side was taken by James Berrett, whilst James Hayter took the captain's armband against his old club. On the bench, Fergus Bell returned after his ankle problem, filling the hole left by the promoted Berrett.
Doncaster enjoyed the majority of the first half, albeit with the opening 20 minutes being a slow start by both sides. Harry Forrester's free kick forced Artur Krysiak into making a save, but that wouldn't have counted due to a linesman sticking up a flag for a push in the Yeovil defensive wall. But the warning signs were still there, with Paul Keegan's effort being palmed around his goalpost for a corner by Krysiak again.
Whilst the Yeovil goalkeeper had done well up until that point, he was rather less impressive when Doncaster took the lead at the midway point of the first half. Harry Forrester's shot on goal was only parried by Artur Krysiak, and the shot spilled into the path of Nathan Tyson who got an easy opportunity to plant the ball into the back of the net for what was a deserved lead. The other problem was lengthy treatment needed for Krysiak himself - a hand injury as he reached for the rebound, but thankfully he was able to continue, rather than have Gareth Stewart having to be introduced.
Krysiak had that hand tested shortly afterwards when Kyle Bennett tested him from a free kick deflected nastily, looping off a defensive wall, and forcing the keeper to change direction. Yeovil had done very little at the other end, with only a blocked Gozie Ugwu attempt that didn't even reach the Doncaster goalkeeper. Matters were not helped by AJ Leitch-Smith being forced off through injury, replaced by Sam Hoskins, and it was only during first half injury time that they showed any sort of signs of being competitive - a couple of corners forced and a James Berrett shot that had the sting out of it by a defensive block, but was the one and only time an attempt on goal had got as far as Stephen Bywater.
Second half action didn't change the pattern of the game. In a fairly inert restart, all Yeovil had to show for it was a wayward Sam Hoskins shot. Curtis Main was given acres of room down the right flank without a challenge, and cut the ball inside for Dean Furman to have the easy job of converting from inside the box to double Donny's lead. That was the cue for a tactical switch, as Ben Nugent was withdrawn - replaced by Alex Smith, as the Glovers formed a 4-4-2 to protect the flanks more than they had been during the first 57 minutes.
Gozie Ugwu planted a header into Stephen Bywater's arms for a rare attempt from him. Ironically, Doncaster's third and final goal came via the best Yeovil chance of the half - a Sam Foley corner saw Kieffer Moore's shot on goal blocked on the line by Dean Furman, but that was the cue for Doncaster to catch Yeovil out on the break. Having pushed up in numbers for the set piece, Yeovil were paper thin in terms of defensive numbers, and Nathan Tyson's run saw him supply Kyle Bennett, for a 3-0 lead and to remove any vague hope Yeovil had of getting back into the game.
That was pretty much that, apart from a James Hayter header going wide of the posts. To add insult to injury, Crawley Town won 5-1 at home, whilst Leyton Orient managed an incredible 3-2 away win by scoring their winning goal in the 11th minute of injury time. Added to Colchester's 1-0 win, this guaranteed that Yeovil sunk to the foot of League One. The gap to safety remains at four points, although only due to Coventry City not being in action today. Based on today's performance, the Glovers will need a big turnaround, in order to put things back on track.
