Yeovil Town were deservedly beaten by a superior Coventry City side this afternoon at the Ricoh Arena by a 2-1 scoreline. A header from Sky Blues centre-back Reda Johnson set them on their way, in a first half that saw both sides hit the crossbar, with AJ Leitch-Smith providing the Glovers effort. In the second half, Yeovil equalised against the run of play when Sam Foley latched on to a Jack Price through ball, and for a short period they looked good enough to get a share of the points. But Frank Nouble's 68th minute shot was parried by Chris Weale into the path of Simeon Jackson and he tapped in for what was to ultimately be the winning goal.
The Glovers selected more or less the same squad for the second match running with the only change being the loss of non-contract player Calvin Brooks due to injury. Other treatment table issues involving James Berrett (thigh), Liam Davis (broken wrist), Simon Gillett (knee), Brendan Moloney and Sam Hoskins meant that the Glovers went into the match six players short and naming only five on the bench - with Joel Grant only just recovering from injury himself.
Early pressure from Coventry produced a quick dividend as they forced three corners in succession. With each one delivered in a different manner, the end result was to unsettle the Glovers defence, and they got third time lucky as Jim O'Brien's set piece saw the defence fail to pick up former Plymouth Argyle centre-back Reda Johnson, who powerfully headed home to give them a 7th minute lead.
That set the scene for the home side to dominate the game, with Jim O'Brien almost doubling the lead when his 25 yard drive coming off the crossbar with Chris Weale well beaten, and they had further chances to extend their lead with Wealey saving an Andy Webster header and Frank Nouble putting another good chance just wide. The Glovers chances were few and far between, with a Sam Foley free kick deflecting through to the goalkeeper, but they could have been level on the half hour mark when a weak Coventry clearance was recycled into the box and AJ Leitch-Smith almost reprised his goal from last weekend, with only the underside of the crossbar denying him.
The second period saw the Glovers almost concede under ten seconds after the restart as Frank Nouble breezed through on goal - thankfully Chris Weale denied his ultra-early effort. But despite their sleepy start to the half, the Glovers drew level six minutes in as Wolves loanee Jack Price managed his second assist in two weeks - threading a ball through to Sam Foley, who nudged the ball past home keeper Ryan Allsop for the equalising goal.
At that point the Glovers enjoyed their best spell of the game, looking comfortable and with the home team getting edgy for the first time in the match. But that 15 minute strong spell was undone when the dangerous Frank Nouble set up Coventry's second. His run and shot possibly took a deflection on its way, but Chris Weale's parry only put the ball straight into the path of Coventry substitute Simeon Jackson who had an easy tap-in and to give the Sky Blues a 2-1 lead.
They held that advantage with some reasonable ease. Whilst Yeovil's first substitution that saw Joel Grant introduced for James Hayter seemed to give the front line some good energy, the later double substitution didn't really achieve a lot, with Sam Foley and Joe Edwards withdrawn for Kieffer Moore and Nathan Ralph. Coventry kept the ball intelligently in the final stages, denying the Glovers a chance to build up a head of steam, and ensuring that they returned from Warwickshire with nothing to show. On the balance of the game, that was hard to argue with.
