Yeovil Town slumped to their third consecutive defeat at the start of the 2014-15 season this afternoon, as Gillingham secured their second victory over the Glovers inside five days. A Joe Martin free kick, and a Danny Kedwell second half goal after he notched a rebound off a penalty saved by Chris Weale sealed Yeovil's fate. The away side didn't help themselves, with Kieffer Moore's first half penalty being saved by Stephen Bywater whilst the game was goalless, but by the time the Gills went 2-0 up the game fizzled out with the winning team looking comfortable.
Glovers boss Gary Johnson made four changes to the side that had turned out against Gillingham a few days previously, with Chris Weale returning in goal, whilst AJ Leitch-Smith came in up front and Kevin Dawson slotted in on the right wing. There was also a shuffle around as Nathan Ralph came in for the suspended Seth Nana Twumasi, resulting in the back four moving across for Jakub Sokolik to play as a right-back, whilst Ralph played as a left-winger.
The visitors could have nudged their way ahead just 17 minutes into the first half, when Ben Nugent was tripped by Leon Legge inside the Gillingham box, with referee Lee Collins pointing to the spot, ignoring protests from the Gills defence. After some deliberations between Simon Gillett and Kieffer Moore, it was the latter who took the ball to the penalty spot, but his kick was far too close to goalkeeper Stephen Bywater, who saved the weak attempt, keeping the game goalless.
Referee Collins continued his pattern of getting involved in contentious decisions ten minutes before the break, when Nathan Smith was judged to have fouled Danny Kedwell, when there was a case for suggesting the Gillingham striker had blocked off the Glovers left-back. Up stepped Joe Martin with the free kick, and the son of former West Ham United and England legend Alvin Martin flighted the ball over the wall, with it dipping into the net for a well taken goal.
Gillingham could have easily gone in a further goal up by the break, with the Glovers defence looking more and more disjointed as game came closer to half time, and it was merciful that they only trailed by one goal by the time the whistle blew. Kieffer Moore was replaced by James Hayter at the break, but the pattern of the game didn't change too much, with Gillingham doubling their lead ten minutes into the second half. Nathan Smith's rash challenge on Aaron Morris gave referee Collins a far less controversial decision to make, and although Danny Kedwell's penalty was saved by Chris Weale, the same player was able to stick in the rebound for the second and crucial goal.
That was pretty much that. Nathan Smith was hauled off for his mistake on the second goal, but those who were left on the field couldn't get any drive or energy to get themselves back into the game. Nathan Ralph and Kevin Dawson looked to have run their legs into the ground beyond the hour mark, with Gillingham looking more and more comfortable with their position as the game went on. Not even seven minutes of injury time - due to Joe Martin being stretchered off with an ankle injury - the second Gills player to leave the pitch in such a manner following Josh Hare's early exit - could give them time to get back into the match, and the end 2-0 scoreline became a very obvious outcome.
