Yeovil Town crashed to their worst home defeat of the 2013-14 season, as a woeful second half defensive performance saw them fall apart against relegation rivals Barnsley. Despite having managed to match promotion-chasing teams such as Wigan Athletic and Leicester City on their travels in recent weeks, defensive mistakes saw them concede four times in 25 minutes as they went bottom of the table in a 4-1 home defeat.
A fairly inert scrappy first half performance from both sides strongly implied at the break that the match would be settled by a single goal, but the second half was a very different kettle of fish. The problems were sparked by players switching off in their own half - Byron Webster's weak back header fell well short of Marek Stech, and Chris O'Grady was the first to react, lifting the ball past Stech for the opening goal. Then Webster's defensive partner Shane Duffy lost possession, allowing Liam Lawrence the chance to burst through and double Barnsley's lead just past the hour mark.
The Glovers did get a brief hope when Jamie McAllister's cross into the box was superbly turned in by Luke Ayling, who fired home through a crowd of players. But any hope that they might have had of producing a big comeback disintegrated as Barnsley twice caught the Glovers short at the back. Chris O'Grady broke the offside trap, and whilst the back four argued with the linesman after O'Grady had netted, it seemed as though the defence had left themselves rather exposed. Three minutes later, and Joe Edwards was out-muscled and slipped onto the deck as Dale Jennings got in behind the back line, finishing the game off and giving Barnsley a 4-1 win.
Results elsewhere saw Millwall draw 2-2 despite twice leading the match against ten men Blackburn Rovers, whilst Charlton Athletic lost 3-0. But Barnsley's win in this 'six pointer' leaves the Glovers bottom and in desperate trouble - realistically next Tuesday's trip to Charlton will become a do-or-die match for them - even then they are going to be relying upon the Addicks making a mess of their three games in hand. With seven games left, things are starting to look rather bleak in terms of the 'great escape'.
