Yeovil Town secured an astonishing 1-1 draw at the Madejski Stadium this afternoon, as they grabbed a point against promotion-chasing Reading despite finishing the game with just eight men. A bizarre second half saw referee Scott Mathieson award the home side a penalty, whilst Byron Webster, Joe Ralls and Kieffer Moore were all given their marching orders in separate incidents that led the match referee to extend the second period by seven additional minutes as a rearguard action saw the Glovers have to scrap for a point.
Certainly for a long period of the match they looked as though they might gain all three points, after Shane Duffy put the Glovers ahead, rising high and ahead of former Glovers loan keeper Alex McCarthy from a deep cross by Luke Ayling, with the ball looping over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Having had a slow start to the match, by the time the game reached the break, Yeovil were good value for their lead, with the goal giving them a big confidence boost.
Everything began to unravel midway through the second half across a crazy 15 minute period. Jamie McAllister's forced substitution in the 57th minute seemed to spark it all, with Joe Ralls being forced to move into an unfamiliar left-back position. Then nine minutes later Byron Webster was deemed guilty of pulling back substitute Danny Guthrie inside the box, and once that was given, referee Scott Mathieson had to pull out a red card to go with it.
No repeat though for Adam Le Fondre, who scored the winning penalty at Huish Park as Marek Stech flung himself down to save the spot kick - but Yeovil's joy on the ball being kept out was short lived, as the ball was returned back into the box, Le Fondre got a second bite of the cherry and although Stech saved again, the ball ricocheted off John Lundstram and over the line for the equalising goal.
Matters seemed to get worse for Yeovil two minutes after the equaliser when makeshift left-back Joe Ralls fouled Garath McCleary down by the touchline. Referee Mathieson seemed to be taking things in a measured way, until he was surrounded by Royals players baying for blood - he duly obliged by giving Ralls a straight red and Yeovil were down to nine men.
The rearguard action inevitably ensued with Yeovil often battling with all players inside their final third, and things went from the sublime to the ridiculous when Kieffer Moore's double booking sent Yeovil down to eight men - the first for kicking the ball away, and then the second, a bit of a striker's foul on Chris Gunter.
Yeovil were fortunate the match official didn't decide to dismiss Tom Lawrence for two late fouls whilst he was on a yellow card - but he hardly helped the Glovers by adding on seven additional minutes for everything that had gone on in a breathless second half. Somehow the eight men threw themselves at everything Reading had to offer, with Stech and Duffy pulling off several huge blocks or saves. At the end with Barnsley, Doncaster, Charlton and Millwall all losing, this had to be a point gained in a game that will live long for the thousand-plus Yeovil fans who witnessed it all unfold.
