Yeovil Town gained a valuable three points against Birmingham City this afternoon at St Andrews, as a James Hayter brace shot down Lee Clark's side. All the relevant action came in the opening 19 minutes of the match, as the Glovers twice stunned the Blues slightly against the run of play, but then defended superbly to keep the home side at bay during the remainder of the match.
The opening 12th minute goal was one of an experienced goal poacher, with James Hayter anticipating the dreadfully weak backpass by Hayden Mullins, nipping in to gain possession, and to lift the ball over the advancing Darren Randolph for a superb finish that came out of nothing.
Seven minutes later, and a great bit of counter-attacking saw Kieffer Moore's work in the build-up feed Joe Ralls, and the Cardiff City loanee's cross was perfect to allow James Hayter to plant a low header across his marker and into the back of the net.
Yeovil had to defend well throughout the game, yet they could have easily had the game out of sight by half time when Kieffer Moore appeared to be hauled back by Birmingham defender Paul Robinson. It would have been a penalty, a red card and the prospect of a three goal lead, but referee Fred Graham was poorly positioned and chose to bottle the decision, leaving still room for the home side to get back into the match.
The Glovers route to victory didn't come without problems being experienced. New loan signing Zoumana Bakayogo only lasted 37 minutes before an awkward slip on the edge of his box seeing him helped off the pitch with what appeared to be damaged knee ligaments. His replacement Jamie McAllister only lasted a further 16 minutes before he went down injured and had to come off. Add in the broken toe injury that Liam Davis had picked up in the lead-up to the game, and by the time Matteo Lanzoni came on to make his debut, Yeovil were on their fourth left-back in a week.
They held on magnificently though, with Birmingham's own substitutions failing to liven up what was a surprising lack of grit and passion from a side that still could get dragged into the relegation scrap. With Barnsley, Millwall and Doncaster Rovers all winning the end result is that the Glovers are only one point better off than when they started today. But psychologically speaking, after today's win, they will believe that they can still fight their way out of trouble over the remaining 21`fixtures.
