Yeovil Town came out on top by a single goal in a scrappy game at Huish Park this afternoon. A seventh minute Joe Edwards goal was enough to see them triumph over basement side Hartlepool United. The Bristol City loanee converted a Sam Foley cross that appeared to be putting Yeovil on their way to an expected team who have now not won in 14 attempts in League One and 16 matches in all competitions. But they failed to find that second goal, and ended up haing to hang on a bit as Pools tried in vain to find an equalising goal.
Team news saw just one tactical change, as Luke Ayling was restored to the back line, playing Joe Edwards further up the flank, which meant that Keanu Marsh-Brown dropped to the bench. Otherwise the seventeen players chosen were as you were. The Glovers got off to the best possible start when Sam Foley's left-wing cross was put into the box, and Edwards' more advanced position on the pitch allowed him to get in at the near post, and slot the ball home from close range.
That was more or less as you were for the first period. The Glovers were the superior side for the 45 minutes, but only because Hartlepool created nothing. Zilch. Not a corner, nor a shot turned up at Marek Stech's end, whilst at the other goal, Daniel Johnson shot over the bar, whilst Paddy Madden's downward header from a Sam Foley cross was easily saved by former Glover Scott Flinders. But the longer the half went on, the more even that dried up.
The concern was obviously with such a slender lead, Yeovil's tendency in recent games to be a very different team in the second half would turn out again. And to an extent that was what happened, with Hartlepool coming out in much more attacking fashion after the break. Joe Edwards almost got his second when he cut inside and curled a left-footer just wide of the target, whilst Paddy Madden put a free header wide. But by now the visitors were fashioning their own chances - Peter Hartley should have done better when he picked up a loose ball from a corner, whilst alarm bells were ringing as Antony Sweeney put the ball in the back of the net, albeit after an offside flag had gone up.
James Poole wastefully volleyed wide, and it was Yeovil's turn to look like the away side as they were forced to feed on scraps on the break. Keanu Marsh-Brown and Reuben Reid came on to liven things up, unusually with the winger playing up front, but when Reid came on 15 minutes later he chose the position usually occupied by Marsh-Brown. In the closing stages, Luke Ayling had to get his full body in the way of a Steve Howard shot on goal, and it all felt like Yeovil were hanging on a little too much for their own good.
Thankfully the equaliser never came, and hang on they did, to cement their 11th place position in the League One table. Never a pretty attractive game, but three more vital points, which leaves them nine points away from the relegation spots, and just four points off the final play-off slot which is currently held by next weekend's opponents Swindon Town. More importantly, their 25 point haul puts them halfway to the traditional '50 point safety' target, and six game short of the halfway stage. That's what Glovers fans need to look at when reflecting upon today's somewhat scrappy game.
