Yeovil Town crashed out of the FA Cup at the First Round stage this afternoon, after they lost to Preston North End at Deepdale for the second time this season. The 3-0 scoreline came about via sloppy defending, as the Lilywhites took their chances, and the Glovers failed to. Two goals in three minutes from Joel Byrom and David Amoo just before the break put the home side in the driving seat, and the game was sealed twenty minutes from time when Chris Robertson headed home. Yeovil's miserable experience was compounded when Ed Upson received his marching orders with just over an hour gone, effectively eliminating any hope of a comeback.
The Glovers went into the match having to make a large number of changes, with three of their loanees refused permission to play in the FA Cup. As a result, Joe Edwards, Korey Smith and Daniel Johnson all dropped out of the squad, whilst Byron Webster also withdrew due to injury. In their place came Dominic Blizzard, Richard Hinds and Gavin Williams for the starting line-up, with Sam Foley switching to a central midfield position. The substitutes bench had a threadbare look to it, with Curtis Haynes-Brown making his return from a loan spell with AFC Wimbledon, whilst Under-18s pair Will Agbo and Mitch Brundle completed the numbers - even then the Glovers could only manage a six man bench, with Luke Ayling named, but not realistically fit to come on at any stage.
Early chances were relatively promising for Yeovil, with Marek Stech not having too much to do of note. At the other end, much of Yeovil's output predictably came from Paddy Madden - a shot from distance that went wide of goal, another that saw Gavin Williams go on the run, feeding the Irishman who forced Steve Simonsen to save at his near post, then a third that he probably should have got on target, but drove the ball at the outside of the goalframe.
Gradually though, Preston began to work their way back into the match, and in the ten minutes leading up to half time, Yeovil wobbled and it proved costly. Two goals in three muntes put the home side in absolute charge. Jack King's through pass to Joel Byrom put him one-on-one with Marek Stech, and the midfielder finished well to put them 1-0 up. Then on 41 minutes, David Amoo doubled the scoreline, having come on as a substitute early on - he received a through-pass from Nicky Wroe, and rounded the goalkeeper to put Yeovil 2-0 down and in big trouble.
Yeovil's frustration at conceding twice so quickly showed as the half closed, with Richard Hinds and Keanu Marsh-Brown both landing in the book - the latter could have seen red when Preston's pushing-and-shoving on the winger after the tackle tried to provoke a dismissal. Referee Andy Haines kept his cool and issued a caution, but it showed how Yeovil needed to apply a bit of discipline to the second period. They ended the half actually unlucky not to score as both Keanu Marsh-Brown and James Hayter had shots cleared off the line in quick succession, showing that they weren't being dominated as such, but two defensive lapses had proved very costly.
The second period was a little bit too easy for Preston, who preferred to play keep-ball rather than feel the need to extend their lead. Yeovil struggled to get much of a hold on the game, and there was only really a long range Paddy Madden shot that was easily held to speak of during the opening fifteen minutes. The game turned on 63 minutes though, when Joel Byrom was the victim of a fiery tackle from Ed Upson, and like the September match at Deepdale, the midfielder saw a red card dished out and Yeovil were now two goals down and a man lighter.
Seven minutes after that, matters went from bad to worse when Scott Laird's corner was headed home by Chris Robertson, with poor marking in the box at fault as Preston went 3-0 up and pretty much guaranteed their route into the Second Round. Reuben Reid was introduced in the final 30 minutes to try to spark something out of the game, and he had a busy performance. But it wasn't Yeovil's day at all, with Paddy Madden once again getting the best of the chances, as Steve Simonsen denied him once again. The game limped to a close with the outcome increasingly obvious, and so it's another season without a serious FA Cup run.
