Yeovil Town succumbed to an old-time nemesis as former Rochdale and Nottingham Forest striker Grant Holt grabbed a hat-trick to send Yeovil tumbling out of the Carling Cup at the First Round stage. The opening goal was also grabbed by a former foe, with ex-Blackpool winger Wes Hoolahan scoring from the penalty spot. The end result was Yeovil's heaviest home defeat since a near-reserve side played against Kingstonian in a minor league competition in April 2001 at the climax of the 2000-01 season.
Yeovil went into the match making two forced changes from Saturday's match with Sam Williams a straight swap for Dean Bowditch whilst Scott Murray made his debut as Ryan Mason dropped out due to a groin strain, with Danny Schofield moved into the centre of midfield. Norwich made numerous changes from their 7-1 thrashing with two starters disappearing entirely out of their squad and keeper Michael Theoklitos being dropped just one game after making his debut.
The first half saw the visitors edge, albeit with Norwich showing signs of a side that had conceded seven goals over the weekend - nervous every time a ball bounced in their box. As with Saturday, the Glovers took their time to get into their stride, but had two good chances during the opening 45 minutes - a Nathan Jones free kick that looped just wide and a Gavin Tomlin long-ranger that Ben Alnwick had to stretch to turn round the corner. Norwich's best chance came when Michael Spillane fired on goal from a corner, but Scott Murray was on the line and able to stop a certain goal. Half time and all square.
Ten minutes into the second period though, Norwich grabbed the lead from the penalty box. Former Blackpool winger Wes Hoolaghan slipped the ball through to Adam Drury on the left flank and he just about got a toe poke ahead of Scott Murray who brought him down for a spot kick. Hoolahan blasted home to give the Canaries the lead.
Scott Murray tried to make amends by firing from a wide position on goal from the restart. The former Bristol City man was withdrawn for Jonathan Obika fairly soon afterwards as the Glovers tried to claw back the game. But within a minute of Obika's arrival a Simon Whaley cross into the box seemed to slip past a couple of Yeovil defenders and into the path of Grant Holt who confidently headed home to double Norwich's lead.
Cody McDonald missed a series of glorious opportunities to extend Norwich's lead - first hitting the crossbar after Grant Holt held the ball up, then skewing the ball badly wide from close range, then fluffing a couple of one-on-ones as Yeovil pushed up allowing Norwich to hit them on the break.
All-in-all, it was Norwich in the ascendancy in the second half, but Jon Obika managed to squeeze through and show the tie was still alive when he took advantage of a defensive error, only to find his attempt on goal blocked out. But the tie was firmly sealed with eight minutes remaining when Grant Holt proved to be the scourge of a Yeovil Town defence once again when he out-muscled the Glovers back line, threading the ball through to Tom Adeyemi. The winger's shot was blocked by Alex McCarthy's legs, but only into the path of Holt who had the easiest of chances to slot the ball home for his second goal of the night.
In the dying seconds, the same man grabbed his hat-trick with Norwich's fourth of the night. Hitting the ball from distance, Alex McCarthy had no chance as the ball flew off the inside of the post, for the pick of the night's goals and with only injury time left there was no way back for the Glovers.
