Yeovil Town were comfortably beaten at the Bescot Stadium this afternoon by a midtable Walsall side as they slipped to their third defeat in four matches. Two second half goals from Troy Deeney and Alex Nicholls ensured that the Glovers slipped down to 18th place in the League One table, having the gap on those in the relegation zone cut down to four points.
Manager Terry Skiverton made two changes to the side that lost to Crewe Alexandra in midweek, with Danny Schofield ruled out with tendonitis in his knee, whilst Nathan Smith was rested. Luke Rodgers and Nathan Jones came in, with Paul Warne switching to a right-wing position. A first half without goals saw Jonathan Worthington get the best Yeovil opportunity, whilst at the other end striker Michael Ricketts attempted to chip keeper Josh Wagenaar but also chipped the crossbar.
In the second period though, Walsall took command when Troy Deeney accepted a through pass via an Anthony Gerrard flick-on, and with the Yeovil back line failing to track Deeney's run he was able to put the Saddlers 1-0 up with 52 minutes gone.
The home side suffered a blow when Gerrard had to head off injured meaning that they ended the game with Ricketts playing as a centre-back, but the Glovers could not find a route through to goal. The game was wrapped up 14 minutes from time when Sofiene Zaaboub's right wing cross got a free header from Alex Nicholls to put the home side firmly in command at 2-0. Things could have got worse when Emmanuele Smith shot against the underside of the crossbar, but not even a series of late substitutions could change the balance of the game for the Glovers.
They now go into Tuesday night's match against Hereford United knowing that with Crewe Alexandra thumping Brighton 4-0 and the Bulls winning their match 2-1, that the gap between them and the bottom sides has closed right up, meaning that with Hereford now seven points behind them that the stakes for the match at Huish Park have just got that little bit higher.
