Yeovil Town went down 3-0 to Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park this afternoon, in a fairly one-sided contest that produced little positivity, despite the morale-boosting midweek victory. One first half goal, followed by two in the second period were compounded by serious injuries to Nathan Jones and Scott Guyett, whilst new signing Martin Woods also limped off on his debut, the combination of which meant that the Glovers finished the game with 10 men, having used up all their substitutions.
The Glovers went behind after 15 minutes in Oldham's first attack of note. Right-winger Gary McDonald got possession and space inside the penalty box after Neal Eardley supplied a pass and he calmly side-footed the ball into the back of the net to put Oldham 1-0 up.
Yeovil suffered a further blow midway through the first half when left-back Nathan Jones suffered an injury that has since been reported as a broken arm. After a brief attempt to continue, he was replaced by Jaime Peters, which led to some extensive reshuffling with Matthew Rose moving into the left-back position, whilst Peters moved out onto the wing.
Scott Flinders was forced into a strong save from Lewis Alessandra, but the Glovers held firm and ultimately got on top for the first time in the game, with Jaime Peters forcing home keeper Mark Crossley into a strong save to block any possible equaliser.
The second half opened with a second injury set-back with Martin Woods having to be replaced almost immediately by Simon Church as a second reshuffle was forced. Oldham pressed heavily but without truly worrying Flinders' goal, whilst the Glovers occasionally threatened on the break, with Church in particular going close when he narrowly missed the target, with an offside flag stopping any chance of Lloyd Owusu from picking up the loose ball.
Yeovil's day though went from bad to worse, when Lee Peltier turned a Lewis Alessandra cross into his own net, under pressure from an Oldham cross. In the build-up Scott Guyett was lying on the deck having landed on his shoulder after a challenge with Alessandra, leaving the Glovers down to 10 men, and with Peltier trying to mark two players in the box as the collision saw the defence stretched.
With lengthy treatment for Guyett, he was unable to continue, and that was effectively game over as the Glovers dropped to 10 men for the final 15 minutes, converting to a back three as they finished the game on a 3-4-2. Inevitably that left matters stretched again as they tried to salvage something out of the game, and three minutes from the end, Oldham polished their day off with Craig Davies stroking home Oldham's third and final goal from close range.
A bad performance overall on a ground where the Glovers have never scored, let alone won before, although it's questionable what will have worried manager Russell Slade more - the result and associated performance, or the fact that he is likely now to have lost two of his first choice defenders for the foreseeable future, with Terrell Forbes still not fit enough to travel today. Once again, there is a lot of thinking to be done before next weekend's match.
