Yeovil Town went down by a 2-1 scoreline at Tranmere Rovers this afternoon as for the sixth occasion, they found the Merseyside club's hoodoo on the Glovers impossible to break down. Whilst there was one positive in that Andy Kirk bagged his debut goal for the Glovers, the game was marred by the sending off of midfielder Marc Bircham, who was dismissed for a second bookable offence midway through the second period.
Tranmere took an early lead following a disputed throw-in that was given to the home side. Gareth Taylor flicked the ball on into the path of Calvin Zola who received the ball 30 yards out. With no Yeovil defender closing him down, he drove forward and fired into the back of the net past Steve Mildenhall for a 4th minute lead.
It was a first half where the Glovers showed little in the way of attacking intent and following the opener, Steve Mildenhall made a flying save to palm a Shane Sherriff attempt over the bar from a Tranmere corner, with Sherriff somewhat unmarked in the box. The same player was able to deny another Calvin Zola attempt, pushing the ball out with his fingertips for a corner, whilst on-loan Bristol City winger Jennison Myrie-Williams fired just wide of the target.
The Glovers got a boost early in the second half when they equalised with their first on target shot of the game. Lloyd Owusu seemed to be crowded out by the Tranmere defence, but he squeezed the ball through to Andy Kirk, who did exactly what he had been brought in to do - act as a poacher and sweep home the equaliser.
However, they didn't seize upon that opportunity. Despite having a good 10 minute spell, they allowed Tranmere a route back into the game when Scott Guyett made an unnecessary challenge on Calvin Zola, who didn't need an excuse to hit the deck. Up stepped Jennison Myrie-Williams who fired the ball home to put Tranmere 2-1 up.
The mountain to climb got even steeper with 19 minutes left when Marc Bircham clipped the heels of Steven Jennings as the player moved forward towards goal, and probably because of the position on the pitch rather than the severity of the foul, Bircham picked up his second yellow of the game and left Yeovil down to 10 men. Inevitably, Gary Dempsey replaced Zoltan Stieber immediately to try and plug the vacant gap in midfield.
In the final 10 minutes, Russell Slade pressed the gamble button by withdrawing defender Nathan Jones for Marvin Williams, allowing the Glovers to switch to a 3-4-2 formation. They went close when Paul Warne fed Gary Dempsey who in turn found Andy Kirk, but Danny Coyne was able to save Kirk's strike on target.
The match was watched by Liverpool full-back/midfielder Lee Peltier today, who was able to make the short journey across to the Wirral to see his old team-mates in action. With manager Russell Slade now bidding for Peltier's services on a permanent basis, there's little doubt that his wish to accelerate such a move will begin in earnest on Monday morning.
