Referee Ray Lee put himself at the centre of controversy at Huish Park today when a succession of disputed decisions allowed Tranmere Rovers to snatch an undeserved equaliser in a 1-1 draw in the sixth minute of injury time, after the fourth official had signalled for four minutes to be played.
The Glovers had put themselves into a 57th minute lead through Marcus Stewart's 20 yard drive into the bottom left hand corner of the net, after the striker had made himself room on the edge of the box. That they managed to get that advantage was testament to the team's battling qualities.
Tranmere proved to be the brutal, physical side that they had been predicted to be, and early casualties were Justin Cochrane and Lloyd Owusu, who both suffered first half injuries forcing the Glovers into early reshuffles. Owusu's was a head injury that should not put him out for too long, but Cochrane left Huish Park on crutches, suggesting that physio Jim Joyce will have yet another entry to his ever-expanding treatment room on Monday.
Paul Warne struck the underside of the crossbar during the early stages, and that was returned by Steve Mildenhall's remarkable save that turned a Steve Davies shot onto the top of the crossbar. But at the break, the Glovers would probably have been fairly glad to get in for a half time chat about the two changes that manager Russell Slade had been forced into, with Darryl Knights and Anthony Barry introduced as early substitutes.
After Stewart's goal gave Yeovil the lead, the Glovers went on to dominate the second period with some strong passing football, keeping possession mainly in the Tranmere half. But they were being frustrated by the performance of referee Ray Lee and his two linesmen who served up a catalogue of strange decisions throughout the afternoon. Steve Davies, who was the subject of three bids from Leeds United in the run up to transfer deadline day, was lucky to stay on the pitch when he elbowed Glovers defender Scott Guyett, and could also have been carded for a blatant dive in the box as the clock ran down. Given that by this time he was already on a yellow card, that could also have seen him leave the field.
But the real controversy began deep into injury time when Lee Peltier was harshly judged to have fouled Robbie Stockdale. Tranmere took the subsequent free kick quickly and 10 yards from the alleged foul, but the match officials allowed play to continue and as the ball was moved up field, again Terrell Forbes was harshly penalised for a foul on Chris Greenacre.
With the game now 5.5 minutes into injury time, the free kick would undoubtedly be the last kick of the game, with the allocated four minutes additional time having long since passed. Up stepped Steve Davies, who perhaps shouldn't have even been on the pitch, and curled the dead ball into the top corner right in front of the travelling Tranmere fans, and almost immediately the final whistle blew, resulting in a furious Russell Slade sprinting across the pitch to remonstrate with the match officials for decisions that appeared to have cost the Glovers a well deserved win.
