Yeovil Town lined up at Sixfields with only 14 fully fit professionals and manager Russell Slade threw a surprise with an adventurous looking 4-3-3 line up. Stewart, Owusu and Warne formed the attack with Owusu on the right and Stewart in the middle.
After a bright Glovers start, the game settled down into an even affair. On 7 minutes, Owusu should have scored with a clear header over the bar from a Peltier cross. Cochrane was having another good game and it was the former Rotherham man who put the Glovers in front on 26 minutes. A long high ball from Guyett was flicked on by Owusu for Cochrane to volley into the net. Two minutes later, he headed on to the bar.
The Cobblers equalized just six minutes later when Guyett failed to deal with a high ball into the box that fell for Paul Hubertz to slot the ball under Steve Mildenhall. One minute later, Paul Warne was replaced (injury) by Marvin Williams. This seemed to help Northampton who took the upper hand and were looking the more threatening side up to half time.
As the half time whistle blew, Russell would be disappointed with the way the Cobblers were allowed back into the game. The injury to Warne did not help matters any and a bit of talking would need to be done to address the Northampton ascendancy in the second period of the half.
Half Time: Northampton Town 1, Yeovil Town 1.
The second half opened in a much quieter fashion with Northampton gradually taking charge of the game. Referee Paul Taylor was not helping matters much with some strange decisions against both teams. A tactical change saw Stewart move into the hole behind the front pairing of Williams and Owusu.
The Glovers were visibly tiring by the middle of the half. The defence showing a tendency to stand off was inviting Northampton to create chances. Not until the 72nd minute did Yeovil have a decent chance in this period, Alcock hitting a rising shot over the bar.
Mr Taylor continued his erratic performance in the middle when showing a yellow card to Ryan Gilligan for a clear punch on Justin Cochrane in the 78th minute. How an obvious red was not shown is a mystery to all but the man in black.
A tiring Marvin Williams, still recovering from illness, was replaced by Anthony Barry on 85 mins. This was a clearly tactical move to beef up the midfield and hang on for the point. The latter stages of normal time saw Northampton hit the post, after earlier hitting the bar, keeping the pressure on throughout the half.
Three minutes into time added on and against the run of play, the Glovers snatched a late, late winner as Lloyd Owusu scored to seal the Glovers first ever league win over the Cobblers.
Final score: Northampton Town 1 Yeovil Town 2
Coca Cola League One, Venue: Sixfields, Saturday 25th August 2007, 3pm kick-off.
A very welcome three points, when a draw would have been a fair result, lift the Glovers up to sixth position in the early league one table. Russell Slade will be delighted with a first away win, but concerned that his side could not take the game by the scruff of the neck after taking the lead.
Weather/conditions: Sunny, clear skies and very hot.
