Yeovil Town bounced back from a humiliating 4-1 away defeat to League Two side Hereford United in the League Cup last week with, what has become in recent months, a trademark 1-0 home win, this time against Port Vale.
A seventeenth minute Justin Cochrane strike proved to be enough to ensure Russell Slade’s side got their first three points on the table. Cochrane, a former Rotherham United midfielder who has yet to even sign for the Somerset outfit on contract terms, capitalised on an excellent cross from debutant on-loan Manchester United midfielder Ritchie Jones.
The game wasn’t all one-way traffic though. Had it not of been for a what only can be described as spectacular finger tipped save, to say the least, from Yeovil’s highly regarded keeper Steve Mildenhall who denied Port Vale’s George Pilkington late on in the second half, the points could have been shared.
With the departure of influential midfielders Chris Cohen and Arron Davies to Nottingham Forest, critics have questioned whether a club with as few resources as Yeovil Town would be able to repeat the success of last year. Even though it is fair too early to call, early signs do suggest that manger Russell Slade has managed to strike the all-important balance between having indispensable experience in the side, alongside extremely gifted on-loan youngsters such as Ritchie Jones of Manchester United and Lee Peltier of Liverpool.
Yeovil Town youth team academy player, Craig Alcock shone on his first-team debut at right-back, with Slade giving the youngster the opportunity at right-back following the abysmal result at Hereford. If Alcock continues to play like he should have little trouble keeping fellow team-mate Mark Lynch out of the starting eleven.
